One thing I always ask myself when photographing birds is: What do I want this image to achieve?
Am I documenting behaviour, showing the bird in its natural environment, or creating something more artistic that I’d want to print and hang on the wall?
Understanding my intent helps guide my decisions, from composition and light to camera settings and editing.
Sometimes it’s about capturing a unique behaviour or moment. Other times, it’s about using light, colour, shadows and the environment to create something a little different.
Creating unique images of birds we photograph regularly can be challenging. I find it helps to slow down, look beyond the bird itself, and consider what else is happening in the scene.
Could a different angle improve the composition? Is there beautiful light worth waiting for? Could the surroundings help tell a better story?
For me, bird photography is about more than simply getting a sharp image. It’s about being intentional, understanding what I want to communicate, and making the most of the opportunities nature gives us.
The difference between a good photograph and a great one is simply taking the time to see the scene differently.
