Little things....

Looking back on the amazing Winternationals over the weekend and it's been on my mind to share my thoughts since Friday night.
Drag racing is cool.
Derrr.
It's fast, it's loud, it's spectacular and it can also be very violent.
The very nature of the competition means that tempers fray, jealousies surface, insecurities breed and sarcasm and cynicism can often drown out even the loudest engine.
We had two scary moments over the weekend for two guys who pit right alongside each other.
Lovo and Jeremy.
Lovo's mechanical chaos was a lot less serious than Jeremy's frightening qualifying wreck but it could have been much worse than it was for the Shoebox too.
Jeremy's crash was terrifying.
Standing there with him with his kids on Friday night at the end of the event brought some things back into perspective for me.
The only reason I'm even bringing it back up is to remind us as a community and highlight it for us as humanity that people are far more important than ET's, MPH and Christmas trees.
Top Doorslammer has a tight community right now.
A unity and a commonality in all that it's doing that is both powerful and vital.
It's easy though to get derailed from that vision.
Inner politics can be potentially very harmful.
It's important to focus on what is truly important.
TD races as a family.
Fierce competition no doubt - and that will never (nor should it ever) change.
You want to beat the guy or girl in the opposite lane - that's the whole point.
But at the end of the day is racing the be all and end all of what we do?
I don't think so.
For me the camaraderie, the community, the mateship and the common passion we share for drag racing, Top Doorslammer and most importantly OUR FAMILIES (both track family and blood family) should always be our first and last focus.
Jeremy's crash should serve as a reminder that we're all in this together.
There's a deep and healthy respect amongst all our teams for what our rival teams do.
Sometimes the perspective can get a little blurry though.
Moments like Friday night should bring it all back into laser focus.
WHAT we do is never more important than WHO we are.
We're all glad you're OK Jez.
I'll come right out and say it - I love and respect you all as racers and teams - but I love and respect you all more as my friends and human beings than what you'll ever do in or near a race-car.
Race safe.
Stay safe.
Be kind.
Always remember.
