This week we say goodbye to a legend. Mr Tom Martin.
A man who had been a photographer for around 60 years or more. The numbers of people, both photographers and models, whose lives has been positively affected by Tom is countless.
I met Tom 14 years ago when I attended the photography class he taught at Fraser Adult Community Education.
I remember that first night. My belief is that if you want to learn the most, you should be the first to arrive, sit up front, take the most notes and turn the lights out. So at the end of the night when everyone else had left Tom came over to me, slapped his hand on the desk and said “why are you here. You know all of this already”. My reply was, “but Tom, there’s always more to learn. Look, I took 6 pages of notes”. That was the start of our friendship.
Sometime during the term Tom mentioned a photoshoot with models at a vintage railway and I plucked up the courage to ask if I could tag along. (I used to be very shy) It was at that photoshoot that Tom paired me up with Keith. Keith and I became great mates and thanks to Toms encouragement we both soon started teaching classes at Fraser ACE. So when Tom moved to Australia for a few years, his teachings continued through Keith and I and now also Steve.
The man may no longer be physically with us, but he remains within the hearts and minds so so many of us and is still positively affecting people through us.
It's been a pleasure mate ;)
