The story of Vannaku Tissahamy of the Wild Refuge.
Among the tales of hunting and jungle life, the story of "Vannaku Tissahamy of the Wild Refuge" is a very prominent character in the history of Sri Lanka. His tomb near the main entrance of the Badulla Public Cemetery holds the memories of this astonishing man's life.
The Inscription at Badulla Cemetery
An inscription on a plaque visible to anyone entering the Badulla Public Cemetery reads:
"We hereby record that the mortal remains of the common man named 'Vannaku Tissahamy', who was born a Vedda, freed himself from traditional Vedda life, yet lived wildly, spreading his authority over the Nilgala Green Forest, bravely and fearlessly challenging the security forces, enjoying all the pleasures of life, befriending the physician named Spittel after meeting him, later imprisoned, aged, and eventually falling sick according to the way of the world and dying at the Badulla Hospital, were respectfully interred by Dr. Spittel at the Badulla Public Cemetery on August 20, 1952."
This inscription confirms Vannaku Tissahamy's extraordinary life journey and his special friendship with the famous physician Dr. R. L. Spittel. He was a Vedda leader who, for a time, challenged the security forces of Ceylon.
Rebellious Youth
Tissahamy, born in Holike in Bintenna Pattu, was raised by the Chief Incumbent of the Mullegama Temple in his childhood. However, due to his rebellious nature, the monk removed him from the temple after about five years.
His personal life was equally controversial. Tissahamy married Doorakumbure Sudu Bandi against her parents' wishes and later lived with the Veddas of Ambilinna. Two years later, he also forcefully took a young woman named Valli as his wife. He had three wives and five children: Sudubanda, Kapuru, Balawanniya, Tikiri, and Kombi.
Murders and Life in the Jungle
Tissahamy became known as a dangerous murderer. After his daughter Kapuru was beaten and killed by her husband, the husband was also killed. Although Tissahamy did not commit the act, he was held responsible for it.
Following this incident, the Korala (chief) of Nilgala pursued Tissahamy. Tissahamy eventually shot and killed the Nilgala Korala. Subsequently, he also killed a Muslim trader. After this series of events, the police pursued Tissahamy, and he hid from place to place in the Nilgala forest with his seven-year-old daughter, Kombi.
The astonishing fact is that the police were unable to catch him for about 16 years. Tissahamy managed to evade the law for such a long period.
R. L. Spittel and the Friendship
The turning point in Tissahamy's life was his friendship with Dr. R. L. Spittel, or "Sudu Hura" (White Brother-in-Law). Although Tissahamy was a very stubborn man, he showed great devotion to Spittel and obeyed only him.
After some time, Tissahamy surrendered to the Badulla police. Due to his age and poor health, the Badulla court sentenced him to imprisonment instead of the death penalty. Dr. Spittel obtained special permission and frequently visited Tissahamy in prison to check on his well-being.
The End
While in prison, Tissahamy became seriously ill and was admitted to the Badulla General Hospital. He breathed his last on his hospital bed on August 20, 1952. Dr. R. L. Spittel, Tissahamy's only friend, honorably interred his body at the Badulla Public Cemetery and erected a tomb for him.
Based on Tissahamy's biography, Dr. Spittel wrote the novel Savage Sanctuary. A. P. Gunaratne translated it into Sinhala as Wana Sarana (Wild Refuge) in the 1960s. The story of Vannaku Tissahamy is a true story of love, hunting, justice, and an extraordinary friendship that remains alive in the folklore of Sri Lanka today.
