Today is August 1st, known in Japan as Hassaku—a day long associated with new beginnings.
Who could have imagined that a small castle town would one day grow into Tokyo, the heart of Japan?
As I quietly offer my gratitude to the warm-hearted people who continue to stand with those affected by natural disasters, I welcome this day with hope.
The day we created these photographs was much like today—
bright, full of energy, and filled with summer light.
In a landscape that could disappear at any moment,
we focused simply on creating in Japan.
Rather than waiting for the wind,
we chose to create it ourselves.
That determination was never spoken aloud,
yet it was quietly shared between us.
徳川家康が江戸入りをした日とされる、
今日は8月1日、八朔。
小さな城下町が、
首都・東京へとつながっていく未来を、
あの頃、誰が想像しただろうか。
天災のたびに心を寄せ、
支えてくださる温かな人々に
静かに手を合わせながら、
今日という希望の日を迎えている。
この撮影の日も、
今日のようにエネルギーに満ちた、
よく晴れた一日だった。
いつ失われてもおかしくない景色の中で、
私たちはただ、
日本で撮ることに集中した。
風を待つのではなく、
私たち自身が風を起こすこと。
その決意だけは、
暗黙のうちに共有し合っていた。
