Michael Collins (1890–1922)

Born in West Cork, on 16 October 1890, Michael Collins became one of the most influential figures of Ireland's revolutionary period, serving as a revolutionary leader, Chairman of the Provisional Government, and Commander-in-Chief of the National Army.

To mark what would have been his 136th birthday, we're sharing a selection of these photographs from the Lafayette Photography archive.

Jane Barlow 1856 - 1917 (Irish Poet)

Born in Clontarf in 1856, Jane Barlow spent much of her life in Raheny and became one of Ireland's most accomplished literary figures. A poet, short story writer, novelist and playwright, she is best remembered for her acclaimed collection Irish Idylls (1892).

Barlow's achievements extended beyond her writing. In 1904, she became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin.

Today, on what would have been Jane Barlow's 170th birthday, we're sharing these portraits from the Lafayette archive and celebrating her contribution to Irish literature. 📚✨

📸 From the Lafayette archives... 🦢

In August 1927, legendary ballet dancer Anna Pavlova welcomed our founder, James Stack Lauder (James Lafayette), to her Hampstead Heath residence in London for a special portrait sitting.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in ballet history, Pavlova is photographed with 'Jack' her bad tempered swan, but you couldn't tell from these photos.

Almost a century later, these images remain a remarkable glimpse into the life of one of ballet's greatest stars and a treasured part of the Lafayette archive.

A great portrait session isn't about getting one good shot, it's about creating options and a Lafayette Photography Executive Portrait isn't your regular headshot.

Mary recently spent some time with us in the studio for updated executive portraits. We worked through a few outfit changes and used a range of backdrops to give her a mix of looks and styles to choose from.

Thanks again for coming in, Mary. Delighted with how these turned out.

The Gresham Hotel on O'Connell Street, then known as Sackville Street, photographed in the early 1900s.

Horse-drawn carts, top hats and one of Dublin's most famous hotels. The Gresham was considered one of the city's grandest addresses and became so synonymous with luxury that Dubliners would often quip, "You're not at the Gresham!" to anyone getting notions.

Originally a row of Georgian townhouses combined into a single hotel. Next door was the business of James W. Mackey, seed merchant and florist, who served as Lord Mayor of Dublin on two occasions.

Both buildings were destroyed during the revolutionary period and rebuilt in the years that followed. The streetscape survived, but some details didn't, including the original "Gresham Hotel" signage carved into the stone façade.
