This image is part of my project BIG&SMALL, now a part of the 2016 exhibition at NCAD.
The project consisted in macro photographs of the natural world with a digital double exposure on images by the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA and the JPL in Pasadena.
The exhibition will be live on NCAD in Thomas Street, Dublin 8; until July 14th.
BIG AND SMALL
This is an exploration of the concept of Human Insignificancy.
By examining the two extremes of the size spectrum; the very
small, represented by photographs of microscopic objects; and
the very big, represented by stars and celestial bodies; a conclusion can be reached about the human plane of existence and
our significance in the larger scheme of things.
The existence of an infinite universe that is ruled by the laws of
physics and chemistry can be mirrored here on earth by the existence of a micro-world, hidden to the naked eye. In our every
day life, we are oblivious to amazing displays of majestic beauty
happening all around us, in both ends of the size scale.
“The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of
the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of
this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some
other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager
they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of
the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so
that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary
masters of a fraction of a dot”.- Carl Sagan
