A huge thank you to Pitch’d Circus Festival for the incredible spectacle they put on for Cork last night in the Marina Park 🔥

It was a real joy to be there not in an official capacity, but simply with the kids and we absolutely loved it.

Well done to everyone involved in putting on such a brilliant free event for the city.

If Pitch’d Circus Festival isn’t already on your radar, it definitely should be. ❤️

Sometimes it’s spending an evening in a hay field getting pelted with straw by small children while trying to protect my camera.

Well… yesterday might have been my first time in Croke Park, but what a baptism of fire, a day to be marked down in the annals of history!!!.

I’ve always said I’m not a natural sports photographer. Before I joined the Irish Examiner I wouldn’t have known a sliotar from a tennis ball, and I’d usually be found pointing my camera in the wrong direction because I was far more interested in the faces in the stands than what was happening on the pitch.

So when I got the call on Wednesday to head to Croke Park for the All-Ireland final, I was excited… and more than a little nervous so I did my homework. I read about the rivalry, the history, the predictions… and I honestly couldn’t find anyone giving Mayo much of a chance.

Then, before the gates opened, I walked the streets around Croke Park and I actually messaged my editor to ask where all the Kerry supporters might be hiding. Everywhere I looked was a sea of red and green. Mayo seemed to have taken over Dublin.

Someone told me All-Ireland finals are won by the passion of a country rather than individuals. Standing there before throw-in, I remember thinking, “Well if that’s true, Mayo have this.”

I even said it to one of the seasoned photographers beside me.

He just laughed.

The match itself… wow.

I got completely caught up asks I finally understood. When the final whistle went, I realised I’d tears in my eyes…and of course I was on completely the wrong side of the pitch.

But maybe I wasn’t.

Instead of capturing the players first, I found myself photographing the tears, the hugs, the songs, families wrapped around each other. I made it across in time to see the Sam Maguire lifted,the celebrations and, of course, the babies being reluctantly hoisted into the cup.

For someone who never thought of themselves as a sports photographer, it was one of those days I’ll remember forever.

The programme and wristband are definitely getting framed, and to top it off my picture made the front page!

Accountability matters. Humanity matters. We cannot put money before people.

The decision to grant planning permission for apartments on the site of the former Bessborough Mother and Baby Home and then to uphold that decision on appeal just beggars belief.

Our history is uncomfortable. It’s dirty. But how we deal with it now will shape our future.

This cannot, and should not, be allowed to happen.

Yesterday, more than a thousand people gathered on Cork’s Grand Parade to make that point.
