A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful little family during an evening session.
We headed out as the sun was beginning to drop, giving us that lovely warm evening light which gradually changed throughout the shoot. It was one of those evenings where everything just seemed to come together — good light, a relaxed setting and plenty of little moments happening naturally between them.
My approach to family photography has increasingly become less about creating a succession of perfectly posed photographs and more about capturing the relationships between the people in front of me.
Of course I’ll always make sure we get the traditional family photograph where everyone is looking towards the camera, but some of my favourite images are usually the ones in between. A dad kissing his daughter, a baby wrapping her hand around a parent’s finger, the way she looks at her mum, or simply the three of them concentrating on each other rather than the camera.
I like to give families the space to interact naturally and photograph what happens. Those small gestures and expressions might seem ordinary at the time, but they are also the things that change incredibly quickly as children grow.
The setting sun gave the whole session a wonderfully warm feel and provided a beautiful backdrop, but ultimately these photographs are about the three people within them and the connection they have with one another.
That, more and more, is what I want my family photography to be about — not just what a family looked like at a particular moment, but what being together felt like.
