There's a reason we keep coming back to black and white.
Strip away the colour and you're left with what actually mattered — the tears your dad tries to blink away during your first dance. Your mum holding it together (just) as she fixes your veil. The belly-laughs with your bridesmaids before you walk in. The quiet moment on your father's arm that nobody else noticed.
These are the frames you'll still be reaching for in twenty years. Not because they're perfect — because they're true.

Morning prep moves faster than anyone thinks it will.
There's hair, dress, shoes, a clock ticking somewhere — a lot going on all at once. But in between all of that, something slows down. And if you're paying attention, you catch it.
A mum stepping in to help her daughter into her dress. The moment they look at each other when it all clicks into place. Nobody asked for that — it just arrives. And it's gone just as quickly.
I feel very lucky to do this job. Being trusted into a room for moments like that — a family just before everything changes — is something I'll never take lightly. This morning at The Busby Hotel was a reminder of exactly why I do it.

It was really good to be part of a day like this.
My first time shooting at Ibrox, and we came away with some beautiful pictures. You read the light, you read the room, and you find the shots that are there.
My first wedding at this ground is next month — and after this, I can't wait.
If you're getting married somewhere that actually means something to you, that's exactly where I want to be.

Some places just mean something.
Whenever Anna & Jerry head down to Ayrshire from Glasgow, this is the spot they choose — Brig o' Doon and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. So for their engagement shoot, there was really only one answer.
A big thank you to the staff at both the Burns Museum and the Brig o' Doon for looking after us on the day — it made everything run smoothly.
And the best part? Their big day is nearly here — they're getting married at Ibrox, home of Rangers FC. A venue that means the world to them.

Happy anniversary to these two — who did the brilliant thing of getting married twice. 🥂
They had a small legal ceremony in Glasgow. Just the two of them, a few of their favourite people, a pint in the pub afterwards, and a walk through the city centre in their wedding clothes. Then a week later came the big celebration with all their friends and family.
I photographed both days — and their engagement shoot before that. There's nothing better than a couple trusting you with the whole journey.
This is what they wrote afterwards, and honestly it's the kind of review that makes the job:

"Derek is one of the best photographers in the business in my opinion. He photographed our engagement shoot, our legal ceremony and our big wedding, and we couldn't be happier with the photos. Not a cloud in the sky. Just the sun, a beautiful spot, and a chance to get out and create.
Days like this are why I do what I do. I headed down to the gorgeous Brig o' Doon — one of those places that does half the work for you, it's that lovely — then on to the beach to make the most of the light. No big setup, no fuss. Just me, the sun, and a brilliant model to work with.
This is how I keep sharpening the craft between weddings: shooting for the love of it, trying things, reading the light as it changes. Some of my favourite frames come from days exactly like this one.

Back to a chilly November day at The Marine Troon — one of those weddings that's stayed with me.
What I remember most is how at ease this pair were all day. No fuss, no nerves. Just two people enjoying their wedding and trusting me to do my thing.
And then there was the part they'd really been waiting for — bringing their dog down to join them. You could see how much it meant to them, all three together on Troon beach with that moody winter light coming off the water. Some of my favourite frames of the whole day came right there on the sand.
A long day, made easy. That's always the goal.

A while ago I was behind the lens photographing my mum's wedding. Then grief hit, and everything stopped.

I took the time I needed — because grief hits differently for everyone.
