📸 Sunderland West End Ladies 3–4 Penrith AFC Ladies | Women’s FA Cup 🏆⚽

A small selection of 43 photos from a fantastic Women’s FA Cup tie today as Sunderland West End Ladies welcomed Penrith AFC Ladies. With Penrith playing a division above West End, the home side went into the game as underdogs, but you certainly wouldn’t have known it from their performance. West End took the game to their visitors and went into half-time 3–2 ahead.

Penrith showed their quality throughout, battling hard to get back on level terms, while the West End goalkeeper was the busier of the two and produced some brave and important saves to keep her side ahead. Eventually Penrith found the equaliser and continued to press, with the winner coming late in the game when a well-delivered corner found a Penrith player unmarked in the box to head home and make it 4–3. West End refused to give up and fought right until the final whistle, even creating a late opportunity to take the tie level. They may be out of the FA Cup, but they should be extremely proud of their performance against higher-division opposition. 👏⚽

There are plenty more photos to come, but this first set of 43 captures what today’s game was all about – two teams battling for the right to progress in the Women’s FA Cup. It was an excellent game to watch and photograph, and every player involved should be proud to have represented their club and played their part in such a competitive cup tie. 📸🏆

📸 Park View v Sunderland RCA | Another Great Afternoon of Grassroots Football ⚽

Yesterday afternoon took me to the fantastic setting of Chester-le-Street Riverside, where Park View hosted Sunderland RCA in a competitive game that eventually saw RCA come away with a 2–0 victory. Both sides had opportunities to score more, with some excellent RCA defending helping keep Park View out, while a lack of accuracy in front of goal also cost the home side. The breakthrough came late in the second half, with two well-taken RCA goals securing all three points and giving new manager Lewis Dodds a great start. ☀️📸 Bright sunshine mixed with changeable cloud created some challenging dappled light at times, but with such a great location it was a brilliant afternoon for photography.

This gallery also includes something that I think is really important – a “Team Behind the Badge” section featuring the staff and volunteers who give their time to support the club. Grassroots football simply wouldn’t exist without these people working behind the scenes, making sure the players and supporters can enjoy days like yesterday. 👏⚽

This was my second game of the day and the start of another busy weekend behind the camera. I’m off again today to photograph Sunderland West End Ladies as they begin their season with an FA Cup fixture.

📸 Sunderland RCA U15 Whites v Winlaton Community Youth U15 Vipers ⚽

A really competitive game today as Sunderland RCA U15 Whites welcomed Winlaton Community Youth U15 Vipers. RCA had the better of the chances for much of the match but just couldn’t find the finish, while Winlaton defended extremely well and kept themselves in the game. With just two minutes remaining, Winlaton grabbed the winner in spectacular fashion – a superb strike over the goalkeeper and into the top-left corner to seal the victory. A tough result for RCA after creating plenty of opportunities, but a great youth football match to photograph with plenty of action and determination from both teams. 📸⚽

📸 Birtley Town U14 v Ferryhill U14 ⚽

A fantastic evening of grassroots football as Birtley Town U14 hosted Ferryhill U14, with Ferryhill eventually coming out 6–4 winners after a really competitive and entertaining game. With a 6:15pm kick-off, the match began in extremely bright, low evening sunshine, which made conditions particularly challenging from a photography point of view but was great weather for the spectators! As the game progressed and the sun began to set, the harsh light softened and provided some lovely conditions for capturing the later stages. It was a real pleasure to meet so many friendly players, coaches and supporters from both teams, and I thoroughly enjoyed photographing their game. A huge thank you to Birtley Town for their kind donation to ANDYSMANCLUB, helping me continue to use my sports photography to support and raise awareness for a cause that means so much to me. 💙

📸 SUNDERLAND RCA 1–1 STOKESLEY | MEADOW PARK ⚽

Another dramatic evening under the lights at Meadow Park as Sunderland RCA welcomed Stokesley in a game that started in daylight and finished under the floodlights. RCA looked the stronger side during the opening half and deservedly went into the break 1–0 ahead, but the complexion of the game changed when RCA were reduced to 10 men.

Stokesley came out strongly after half-time and began pushing for an equaliser, but RCA showed tremendous determination and defensive resilience, battling throughout the second half and repeatedly keeping the visitors out despite the numerical disadvantage. Chances continued to come for Stokesley, but the ten men looked as though they might hold on for all three points until injury time, when a ball delivered into the RCA box finally produced the equaliser.

A frustrating ending for RCA after such a determined performance, but a thoroughly competitive game to photograph – from the changing natural light of the first half through to some great action beneath the Meadow Park floodlights.

🏏 A Fantastic Day of Cricket – 670 Photographs Now Online! 📸

What a brilliant way to round off an incredibly busy weekend of sports photography! After covering games at Sunderland RCA and AFC Houghton, Sunday took me to Peterlee CC for a fantastic afternoon of cricket and two matches that certainly delivered on the drama.

The semi-final saw Washington CC take on South Shields CC, with Washington clinching victory off the very last ball after a hugely competitive game. That set up the final between Washington CC and Easington Colliery Welfare CC, and incredibly, we were treated to another nail-biting finish, with Washington CC securing the win in the very last over. Two incredibly close games and fantastic entertainment for the neutral spectator! 🏏☀️

The glorious sunshine lasted throughout the day, although from a photography point of view it certainly provided a challenge – harsh, bright light earlier in the afternoon followed by constantly changing light as we moved into the early evening. It made for a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable six-and-a-half hours behind the camera, capturing the batting, bowling, wickets, catches, celebrations and all those moments in between.

A huge thank you to Washington CC for inviting me along and, particularly, for making a donation to ANDYSMANCLUB. My photography has a purpose beyond simply capturing sport.
