This is Sunderland is a longterm ongoing project which aims to document the ever-changing industrial and historic landscape of Wearside. Last week I got an email from a fella called Nick Oldham.
He'd worked on a Channel 4 documentary filmed in Sunderland from 1988-93 and thought I'd be interested in seeing it. (He was right). In his words...

'It was filmed over 5 years starting from the launch of the last ship and follows the plans to revitalise the town (as it was then) together with the lives of 3 families all with a teenager about to make their way in the world and with visions of their own future.'

Very bleak in parts - very Sunderland - there's some incredible scenes. It's an amazing insight into the place back in the early 90s, in the grip of industrial decline. In some ways, not that much has changed. The 'becoming a City' street party scenes are a treat. Well worth setting an hour or so aside to watch the lot.

Whatever happened to the Dream Roadshow...
