My former partner at work won an award this week. I’m so proud of him. ❤️🫡

We’re incredibly proud to announce retired police dog Captain and his former handler, PC Marcus Cottrell, as the recipients of our Thin Blue Paw Lifetime Achievement Award.

German Shepherd Captain served with West Midlands Police for three years, building an extraordinary record alongside Marcus before injury sadly brought his career to an early end.

Together, they tracked down wanted suspects, missing people, weapons, vital evidence and stolen property. Captain detained countless criminals, helped bring violent offenders under control and even tracked a car thief through woodland in near-total darkness before finding him hiding in a brook.

Within their first year together, Captain and Marcus were recognised with a National Police Chiefs’ Council Award for their outstanding start to life on the beat. They were also selected to work at the G7 summit in Cornwall shortly before Captain’s retirement.

Captain may have had a shorter career than expected, but the impact he made was remarkable.

Sadly, his years of demanding police work have taken their toll. Since retiring, Captain has faced significant health problems and recently underwent major spinal surgery. We have been proud to stand beside him, covering the full cost of more than £30,000 in veterinary treatment.

Captain showed courage, determination and an incredible drive throughout his police career, qualities he has continued to show throughout his retirement and recovery.

As our founder Kieran Stanbridge said: “Captain worked hard and he paid for it with his health. He and Marcus were an impeccable team in service, and Captain deserves this accolade.”

Please join us in congratulating RPD Captain and former PC Marcus Cottrell, our Lifetime Achievement Award winners! 👏💙🐶🚔🇬🇧

We are really struggling to get our dogs adopted at the moment and it's breaking our hearts that we are barely getting any applications at all for them 💔

As a Sanctuary we do have some harder to place dogs that need adult only homes, most also needing pet free homes and will need lots of meets with potential adopters over a long period of time. 🧡

We know it's a lot to ask.
We know not many people are out looking to re-home dogs that might need to be muzzled in public or have specific behavioural requirements.
We know that many of these dogs may end up staying with us for a long time...

BUT

If just maybe there is that special someone with the quiet home and love to give, who is willing to work with our team to get to know one of our misunderstood loving dogs, we want to do everything we can to reach them.

We try to be as flexible as possible we have a few set policies as stated on our adoption page to keep people and pets safe but everything else is all dependent on what each individual dogs needs.

If you're not sure feel free to drop us a message, email or fill out a form and let us know, we are happy to advise where we can what dogs may be suited to you🐾

🧡 If you want to help but not ready to adopt or can't find a suitable dog on our website please consider fostering for us. We only have so much space at the Sanctuary and we have to make sure our forever resident dogs are happy and getting the attention and time needed from our experienced staff who can handle them safely. Having safe, loving foster homes means we may be able to help other dogs when we just don't have the space for them at the Sanctuary.

We absolutely love seeing the dogs adopted from the happy in their new homes, getting updates from their adoptive families and we so desperately want to find the special homes for our long-term dogs so we can see them happy in their new homes too! Please help us get them there 🧡🐕
Fill in an application, drop us a message, share, comment, tag and help us get these beautiful dogs into the homes they deserve and hopefully one day we will be sharing with you all happy updates of them all in their new loving homes! 🧡

In January this year, my uncle lost his brave battle against this cruel disease. We miss him everyday.
From being a very active and healthy man, less than seven months later, my uncle Steve passed away with his wife by his side.

The disease progressed so rapidly that it took us all by surprise. Steve was brave until the very end even when he could no longer use his body or communicate with his loved ones. He will never be forgotten by all that knew and loved him.

I haven’t been on my bike for a number of years so I thought that this was a small thing I could do in Steve’s honour.

Every kilometre matters. Every day, six people are told they have motor neurone disease (MND).

Within months, they may lose their ability to walk, talk, or even breathe. There’s no cure. Not yet. And time is running out so I need your help.

I am cycling 250km in May to fundraise for the MND Association. Will you join me in supporting a good cause?

£35 Could fund an MND Connect helpline advisor for one hour, helping to provide information and support to anyone affected by MND. 🧡

No matter how big or small, every donation matters. Thank you.
