When I think of an English wedding, I think of days like this. Amber and Liam were married at Liams’s family home. Amber and her bridesmaids getting ready in the pool house - doing their own hair and makeup, the boys putting out welcome drinks, an intimate back garden ceremony, rolling countryside, hand made bouquets, and unfiltered joy and emotion.

Loved every moment. Love these two.
Thank you for trusting me with your vision. These really do feel like stills from a Nancy Meyers movie.

A one frame post.

Photographs don’t need an explanation behind them. That’s the beauty in all art; to leave the viewer wondering, figuring out the story, or to simply leave an impression.

Wedding photography doesn’t always give you this, as the celebrations tend to run on a similar path.

But this photo - taken so quickly in the moment, and yes, I know it’s not technically accurate - holds a story. The couple in the photograph, with their slightly animated faces are doing something so many of us do on a daily basis.

Let it sit with you a while before you read where I summarise the story, and see what you get from viewing it.

The story: A portrait of Tyler & Katrina. After sitting for a full list of group family portraits they were presented with a traditional Scandinavian cake by a family member who wanted to pass over a tradition that meant something to them. Not wanting to be rude Tyler and Katrina took the cake graciously, and ate a piece. They didn’t rush the process, listened to their relatives tell them about the cake and its symbolism, all the while itching to get to the party where cocktails and friends were waiting.
This frame captures that, how polite and thoughtful they are as people but also that immediacy of “have we shown enough interest and gratitude to now be able to excuse ourselves?”

For me, it is always the unplanned portraits that really dive into the storytelling aspect of photography on a wedding day.

Such a joy to witness and document this beautiful wedding day.

I first photographed Beth and Brad at their beautiful converted barn in the countryside. Photographing in somebody’s space lets you see that person deeply. A Home filled with artwork, books, Music, the smell of food being cooked in the kitchen and a cold glass of white w**e in hand.

It came as no surprise after photographing Beth and Brad in their home that their wedding day would be uniquely them.

Confetti that had been dried and stored over the period of 15 years; every bouquet Brad had ever bought Beth showered over them in celebration after their Personal vowels. Live Music throughout the whole day, a coffee van, a Polaroid wall, a life-size handmade Guess-Who board of dogs including their dogs Skye, a personalised letter on each table for every guest to be able to read what it meant to the couple that they were there to celebrate with them, and a best friend singing and playing guitar for their first dance.

I photograph weddings with the couple at the forefront of my vision. We are all uniquely different. I knew that to photograph Beth and Brad‘s wedding day would be more about the Inbetween moments, the moments that happened after a composition had been created, the movement and the feeling of the emotion of the day, so that is where my focus was.

A Joy to be a part of, and now I just need my film scans back so this apprehensive feeling, like a child waiting for Christmas morning, can subside.

When you photograph on film I can tell you that scan day feels like Christmas morning when you were 6 - it’s that kind of thrill.

Looking through the film scans and adding them to client galleries from wedding days and engagement sessions I felt the words I had read earlier that day.

Because what is photography? Why are some of us so drawn to it - whether to be the taker of the image or to view the final image with such admiration?

And, just like any art form, it’s different for all of us.

I’ve always found it difficult to put into words what photography means to me. Just like the only words I can string together to tell my daughter how much I love her is: ‘so much!’ But reading what other photographers have said about this medium and their reason for photographing opens up this thinking.

I stopped on the two quotes in this post, and included them for you to read. To see how the ideas of these two photographers explain what photography is. They are vastly different views but somehow, together, they explain what I think and feel wedding photography is.

I used a select few frames from the recent 35mm scans I received late last night to try and highlight this reasoning.

Over the last couple of years, analogue photography has become a “trend” in the sense that it is being rediscovered as a medium. It never went away, analogue photography has always been a choice for photographers. But seeing it grow in popularity to use to document wedding days makes you think more about the reason. Is it because it is “trendy” for the film aesthetic? Maybe in some cases. But my understanding is that it’s our way of rebelling against Ai. The clinical crispness. To feel the rawness and the way film renders light - a true authentic representation of a wedding day. That is something to hold on to dearly “the humanity of the moment” and to be able to offer “places for the viewer to dream in”.

Forgetting to come up for air at the moment. There’s never a ‘quiet period’ as such, but you know when you’re in full swing when your friends tell you they know they have to wait 7-10 business days for my replies. Ooops.
The most glorious moments have beeb happening, and I’ve put my socials on the back burner over the last week or so. There’s so much to share, from wedding days, portrait concepts that came to life for couples, pre sessions, and my internal dialogue I like to bring to you all over reels.

It all might have to wait a little while though and I’ll drip it all in when I find a moment ‘spare’.

For now, let me share with you Amber & Liam. A day celebrating in the grounds of Liam’s parents with an intimate guest list and enough tears to fill the swimming pool. I knew it would be a brilliant day when I realised Amber would be keeping on her amber necklaces. Amber wearing amber.

A little different to be sharing this with you today. It’s more of a journaling post, what I’ve been thinking and feeling. And how, as a wedding photographer, I never want to be static, and crave constant creativity.
Hope you like it.
It’s hard to be vulnerable on the internet.

Jennifer & Carol came from Boston Massachusetts to visit Chatsworth House in Derbyshire… well, more than just to visit it.

Jennifer had planned for months the place where she would propose to Carol, and knowing how much she adores Pride & Prejudice there could be no other place than this one.

An afternoon spent with these two filled my cup to the brim.

Oodles of love to you both. Thank you for inviting me to document this beautiful moment.
