Blackbird
He comes on chosen evenings,
My blackbird bountiful, and sings
Over the garden of the town
Just at the hour the sun goes down.
His flight across the chimneys thick,
By some divine arithmetic,
Comes to his customary stack,
And couches there his plumage black,
And there he lifts his yellow bill,
Kindled against the sunset, till
These suburbs are like Dymock woods
Where music has her solitudes,
And while he mocks the winter’s wrong
Rapt on his pinnacle of song,
Figured above our garden plots
Those are celestial chimney-pots.

This regular visiting songbird likes to sit on the roof of the outbuilding and sing his sweet song 🎶

Some of you may know, but for those who don’t, I used to run a natural skincare and wellness business called Wild Swan.

As part of that journey, I gained a diploma in natural skincare formulation and spent years creating products using natural ingredients and essential oils. Essential oils were at the heart of everything I made – from skincare, bath and body products, lip balms and candles, to natural remedies for everyday adventures.

Most of my creations came from a personal need. If I couldn’t find something that worked, I would create it myself.

One of my favourite products was a natural tick and mosquito repellent that I developed while travelling through South America and the Amazon. Despite spending long periods outdoors in areas buzzing with insects, I didn’t get bitten once. It became one of those products I never wanted to be without.

I’m sharing this because, as a mum and pet owner, I’m increasingly concerned about the number of ticks around at the moment. I’ve recently heard of several people being bitten in local parks and countryside areas, with some later developing Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is not something to take lightly, and it’s worth taking a few minutes to read about the symptoms and how to protect yourself and your family. I always recommend carrying a tick removal tool in your bag when you’re out exploring.

If you find a tick attached, the current advice is to remove it as soon as possible using a proper tick removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers, taking care not to squeeze the body of the tick.

All of this has me wondering whether it’s time to bring my natural repellent spray back.

It’s a fresh, pleasant-smelling spray that can be applied to clothing, arms and legs before heading outdoors, helping you enjoy nature with a little more peace of mind.

Would this be something you’d be interested in seeing again?

Small, quiet, and often overlooked, the daisy arrives softly with the change in season.

It’s one of the first gentle reminders that spring is here…

A return to simplicity.
A quiet kind of resilience.
A reminder that beauty is all around us 🌼

Most people walk past this without ever noticing it.

Ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) — a quiet, unassuming plant growing underfoot on paths, verges, and wild edges. Often dismissed as a weed… but it’s been used for centuries as a healing herb.

I’m always drawn to this stage — when the seed head begins to open and those tiny white stamens emerge. It feels like such a fleeting, easy-to-miss moment.

There’s something I love about photographing plants like this… the overlooked ones. The ones that don’t demand your attention, but quietly offer so much if you slow down enough to see them.

It makes me wonder how many plants we step over every day without realising their stories, their uses, their beauty.

Do you notice plantain where you are? Or is there a “common” plant you’ve started to see differently over time?

as the seasons come and go
and winter loosens its hold
there is a sense
that life and death
stand closer in the cold

the solstice comes in fog and quiet
holding endings and beginnings
in the same breath

yet in the countryside
i find even winter’s bleakness
carries its own beauty
regardless…
