A moment for the groom.

I often hear that grooms are either nervous or not keen on having their photo taken. My job is to make that feel easy, and to get you some portraits you’ll still love in twenty years.

Elliot and his lads arrived at Whistle Barns already suited. Buttonholes from Betty's Flower Club, then a toast with Jägermeister. I raised an eyebrow too.

He looked sharp, and he held it together right up until Faye walked down the aisle on her dad’s arm.

By the evening the jacket was off, the braces were out, and he was front and centre on that dancefloor.

Grooms, this is your reminder that you’re half of this day.

Ellie & Ben at The Priests House, Barden Tower.

Mago and Truffle came in matching dinner jackets. They had their own chaperone for the afternoon, which is the kind of detail that tells you what sort of day this was going to be.

A sax player out on the grass, confetti on the steps, and a courtyard full of people who clearly adore each other. Some couples are relaxed. These two were properly fun, and so was everyone around them.

The Priests House sits in the Yorkshire Dales near Skipton. A stone chapel for the ceremony, then nothing but hills behind you for portraits. We were still out in it at half eight for the last of the light, and the dance floor filled early and stayed full.

A moment for the details.

Stefanie & Katie married at Sheffield Town Hall, then headed over to The Chimney House for an intimate family feast.

The Chimney House is a small wedding venue in the heart of Kelham Island. One long table, everyone sat round it, candles down the middle and that mural on the wall behind.

The florals and bouquet were gathered by Megan and Vicky at Greystone Flowers. Loose and a bit wild, they did such an amazing job.

Lizzie & Adam at Ringwood Hall, Chesterfield. On a Tuesday.

Didn’t stop anyone. People came from Sheffield, from France, from Canada. Booked the flights, took the days off, turned up. That tells you plenty about these two.

Warm, sunny and about as relaxed as a wedding day gets. Lizzie’s lace was something else, and her girls in that deep green looked brilliant next to it.

Jess & Max, Sheffield Town Hall. Shot on 35mm.

I’ve been bringing a film camera to weddings this year, and this is the first time I’ve shared any of it here. A roll only has so many frames, so every one gets a bit more thought. What comes back is grainy, honest and a little imperfect, and that’s exactly why I love it.

These are from Jess and Max’s town hall wedding in June. A few frames in the Winter Gardens, then a wander through the streets around Campo Lane before the party at Couch. Their full day is coming to the grid soon.

Olivia & Andy at Thirsk Lodge Barns.

It started quietly. Olivia and her bridesmaids having a slow morning in The Farmhouse, Andy and the lads down the road with a rum. By the end of the ceremony, they were dancing back down the aisle and the whole barn was up with them.

The rest of the day stayed at that level. Drinks out in the courtyard, a live illustrator getting some brilliant reactions, and O&A doing the rounds with everyone, completely unhurried. They clearly wanted time with their people, and they got plenty of it.

I shot a roll of 35mm on this one too. Those are coming soon.

Right, a proper hello.

It’s been far too long since I’ve done one of these, there are a lot of new faces here now, and it happens to be my birthday today. Felt like the right moment.

I’m James. Born in Cheshire, though I’ve lived in Yorkshire for most of my life. I live here with my wife Larissa, and Charlie, our spaniel, who thinks he’s the director of James Patton Photo.

5 years of shooting weddings now, and it still hasn’t worn off. I get something out of every single one, and I’ll never take for granted that people let me be there.

Still learning, though. That bit should never stop. This year it’s meant a new editing style and shooting on film, which I’d written off as something I’d never be interested in. Then I tried it. Now I’m obsessed.

When I’m not working, or giving Charlie my full attention, I’m usually away somewhere. Four trips a year is my minimum, and I’d call that restraint. New places, new food, as much sun as I can get, and there’s usually a gig in there somewhere.

Tell me where I should go next, or who I should go and see. I’m taking suggestions.

O&O at Sledmere House, Driffield.

No rushed morning prep here. A bit of fun and fizz before Ollie and Olivia said their vows under that big domed ceiling in the library at Sledmere House. A wedding venue with proper character, and a whole lot of history behind it.

After the ceremony, I had a wander round the grounds with them for portraits and was spoilt for choice. No strict shot list, just a relaxed 15 minutes to grab some shots before O&O headed back in to celebrate with their guests.

Genuinely lovely day to be part of. Thanks O&O for having me along.

Two brides, one nan, and 2,500 plants from around the world.

Stefanie and Katie married at Sheffield Town Hall and walked to the Winter Gardens afterwards, because it’s a minute around the corner and it would be daft not to. Family photos in the gardens, and this one with their nan.

The whole day was like that. No long shot list, no standing about. They wanted time with their people, good food and zero fuss, and that’s exactly what they got.
