Set within Kaingo Game Reserve, an officially declared protected area and a core zone of the UNESCO listed Waterberg Biosphere Reserve…. Which is an African Eden of outstanding scenic beauty, 16,400 hectares of bushveld, savannah, rivers, valleys and magic landscapes, my first visit gave up an amazing experience with close encounters with members of the Big Five….. this truly is an incredible place, where ancient bushland stretches to the horizon and history is etched into the rocks by the San people who walked these paths long before us.

ONE EVERY DAY: 352 RHINOS POACHED IN 2025

South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has confirmed that 352 rhinos were poached in 2025, a 16% decrease from the previous year. This equates to an average of one rhino killed per day.

Despite the decline, white rhino numbers fell by 11% in 2024, and the overall population remains under pressure.

Key trends include:

75% of poaching occurred on State-owned land and in National Parks.

Kruger National Park lost 175 rhinos, up from 88 in 2024, despite increased security and dehorning efforts.

KwaZulu-Natal reduced losses significantly, from 232 to 97.

Limpopo Province lost 36 rhinos, including 10 in December, largely on reserves without adequate security.

The data highlights the continued adaptability of organised criminal syndicates, shifting activity to areas of vulnerability.

Private reserves remain central to rhino protection, particularly where security, technology and community collaboration are well coordinated.

While the reduction is positive, the current rate of loss remains unsustainable. Strengthened cooperation and sustained investment will be essential to improving outcomes in 2026.
