Spring forward – fall back! British Summer Time ends today, when we put our clocks back one hour and embrace the change of season once again.

Some weird and wonderful vintage photographs of clocks and clock towers from The Francis Frith Collection, with some fascinating history to help tell their stories. Some hand-coloured, but most in black and white, it's worth taking the time to read this one!

(October 12th) in 1948, the first Morris Minor car rolled off the production line at Cowley, Oxfordshire, and made its official public debut at the Earls Court Motor Show in London 2 weeks later, on October 27th 1948.

Frith photos are full of nostalgic views of old cars, perhaps none more so than the extremely popular Morris Minor, which was launched in 1948 and went on to become the first British-made million-selling car. Read more about this much-loved car in our special blog.

in 1977 and 100 years after it was opened in the May of 1877, the Winter Gardens at Morecambe in Lancashire became a listed building, but sadly closed later that year. However, it has been the subject of a campaign since the 1980s to restore the building to its formal glory and is now, once again, entertaining visitors whilst ongoing extensive refurbishment works are carried out.

The ‘Yorkshire Belle’ on TV tonight! Our Great Yorkshire Life airs on Channel 5 TV tonight (Friday October 2nd) at 8.00pm, featuring the Bridlington coast where Skipper Peter Richardson gets the historic ’Yorkshire Belle’ twin screw pleasure cruiser ready for the new sailing season. Here’s a great photo from the Frith archive of the Yorkshire Belle in her heyday in the 1960s.

St Pancras Station in London was opened day (October 1st) 1868, taking its name from nearby St Pancras's Church, over whose churchyard some of the railway lines were laid. The station served the Midland Railway. At the time of its opening, the roof of its arched engine shed, designed by William Henry Barlow, was the largest single-span roof in the world.

August 19th is World Photo Day, which was created in 2009 by the Australian photographer Korske Ara as an annual, world-wide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography, to inspire and encourage people to pick up their cameras, take photographs and share them with the world.

Join us to celebrate World Photo Day, as we showcase a selection of the many places featured in The Francis Frith Collection over the years, with old black and white historical photos and some modern coloured views documenting the changes that have taken place there.
