Well, I just about survived the school holidays.

Not the best one this end but I did repaint the kitchen - oh the excitement!

So a quick reintroduction and some more random factoids for the first day back at my desk for September...

What have you been up to in the last six weeks? Do you have a favourite animal? I'm told by my son favourite animals and colours are essential and everyone should talk about them early in friendships. My favourite colour is purple just FYI. Maybe adults don't discuss these things enough?

Getting branding photos you love is a group effort.

I always work with you on what you want for your image bank, but it's even more amazing when you get to work with a brand strategist and web designer too.

It means that everything is planned and thought out from the very beginning from colours, vibes, spaces on the website etc.

It makes my job a joy and the end results fit so seamlessly into your projects.

Read what both Shiranee had to say about her photos and what Jo .ingram said about working together on her web brief. And make sure you give both of these incredible women a follow while you're at it!

If you know a web designer who may be looking for a collaborator on future projects, feel free to tag them below, I'd love to have a chat and see if they may be looking for a new partner.

I just live for these little moments...

Chloe & David hit some unexpected hurdles on the way to their wedding day which they handled with humour and good grace.

And it reminds me why photographing people's weddings are such a privilege that I have in my job.

Chloe & David at a quiet point in the ceremony just turned to each other and started giggling in disbelief that they were in this moment.

It was absolutely a highlight of a day that everyone was overjoyed to be sharing with them.

We’re half way through the holidays, and if you’ve got children starting or going back to school in September, you’re probably starting to think about it. Writing lists of school uniform and stationery that are needed and arranging shopping trips to get it all.

Even if you’re not thinking about it yet, I’m sure that on the day they go back you’ll be marking those memories and snapping away on the morning of that first day. When my son started school and my camera was in overdrive, and I’m sure it will be the same this year marking his final year in primary.

Here are a few tips for you to help you take great back to school photos!

🚸 Make sure you’re not rushing on the morning - if you think that things are going to be frantic, consider taking your back-to-school photos a day or two before the start of term.

🚸 Think about where you will take your photos - by the front door is the traditional place, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best place for your photo.

🚸 Get some school photo detail shots - Their book bag, the little shoes, their crinkled tights that are slipping down round their ankles – all these tiny details will seem so common place come the Christmas holidays that you’ll forget them in a few years’ time. But you’ll want to remember them, trust me!

🚸 Include the rest of the family in the photos - It’s great to show the passage of time in photos when you can compare them side by side across the years.

🚸 Something to consider - just a word on internet safety when it comes to sharing school photos – make sure you aren’t inadvertently sharing more than you are comfortable with if you put photos up online.

This one is a bit of a biggie but it’s the best one of all of them, I promise, so give it go.

🌟 Create a family time capsule

Did you ever do this at school? The metal tin that got buried for future generations to dig up and sift through. I loved doing this.

This is the same thing but with your family history.

You don’t need to bury it in the garden of course! Just get a shoe box or even a jiffy envelope and just pick a time frame for when you’ll open it. Dave has vacuum sealed ours that we did last summer because he doesn’t trust me not to peek (in fairness he’s probably right 😉)

Buy a disposal camera or a pack of polaroid film or go out and take some photos of each other and yourselves together. If you’re using your phone photos, apps like Snapfish often offer free prints to new users or very cheap prints otherwise.

Some ideas for photos:
You all together (set a timer or take a selfie)
Kid with their current favourite toy or stuffed animal
Kid with a book they currently adore
Kid with a meal or snack they currently won’t stop eating
A photo with the car you currently drive; because boy do those photos date!

Other things you can do:
Write down what your kids are into
Little kids could draw a picture of your family.
How about slightly older kids write letters to other members of their families. In 10 years (or however long you leave your time capsule, you’ll get so much joy from reading your younger child’s thoughts about life, I’m sure of it… or some belly laughs at least!)
We also recorded videos of Grayson talking to his future self.

I already cannot wait to open ours 🥹

Today I wanted you to let your kids’ imagination run wild...

This might be a harder sell for older kids but lots of adults do this really well so bear with me!

Get them to play Toy Story. Grab a camera and encourage them to direct their favourite toy in its own photo story. How creative can they be. Can they tell you their toy’s story while showing you the photos?

And don’t let your kids tell you it isn’t cool… Mitchel Wu makes his whole career out of photographing toys. His photos are AWESOME! Or is another one to check out.

Make sure you’re following for the best one of all coming up next post.

P.S. Grayson called this photo ‘Friends At Last’ 🥹

Here’s another great photo related activity but it’s a slightly trickier one…

It’s definitely more of a time commitment or a rainy-day project.

I’m going to leave you to read all about how to do this if you want to do this:
https://torideslauriers.com/how-to-create-easy-stop-motion-videos-with-your-kids/ (or google tori deslauriers stop motion because we all know Instagram hates links!)

It’s SUCH good fun but it does take a bit of work.

I did this with my son when he was only four so it’s very achievable even with young kids and a great solo activity for older kids. Let them surprise and impress you by planning a story and completing this alone.

Save this post to come back to at a later date!

Here’s your second photography game idea.

How did you find the scavenger hunt?

Get your camera back out (any camera you have is fine – a disposable, a phone, a point and click) and try and find your name in nature. You can find any letter in the world if you hunt hard enough.

For example, here is TORI occurring in the natural world.

Can you find your names? I’d love to see them!

Follow me for more ideas coming up.

Welcome to summer holidays now schools have broken up!

I wanted to share some photography related ideas that I sent out to my mailing list last year, for adults and kids alike… (and if you want more content like this then the sign-up link is in my bio).

First up, go on a photography scavenger hunt.

Try to find something starting with the first letters of entire alphabet. You can either send the kids off round the house or go on an outdoor adventure. Think ant, bench, cat, dog etc.

This can take up hours of a day and it’s a totally free activity. And you’ll end up with 26 cool photos your kids take. Maybe print them and make them into a cool little book for them? I love seeing the world through children’s eyes.

Want more games like this? Follow along for more coming up.

Thought it was time to reintroduce myself as I've been a bit quiet lately.

I'm Tori and I photograph the keeping-it-real Mums. The ones who are messy and real. The ones who want belly laughs and upside down moments. And the same women who are building empires in the gaps of the day between drop off and bed time but don't want to feel they need to perform professionalism. I also photograph weddings for joy-seeking couples that want photos of friends over favours.

Outside of that I'm a wife and Mum myself. And about a million other things.

Current project outside of work: decorating the kitchen. I started and 10 minutes later have got bored but really need to carry on and not prove my husband right that I'd quit in the middle of it. ADHD problems 😂
