It’s not every day you see a familiar face in the hallways, but we were delighted to host a visit from First Minister John Swinney today.
The building was buzzing as he spent time with our neighbours at the Renfrew Men's Shed. It’s always great to see our local community spaces being recognised at such a high level and to have such a notable guest in our creative hub.

Trying to Herd Kittens: Leadership Lessons from AI Filmmaking

Over the past few days I’ve been building a 2-minute WWII aerial combat trailer titled Death Above, Earth Below using AI video tools including Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 Fast.

The process?

Like trying to herd kittens.

What struck me wasn’t the technology. It was the leadership lesson.

AI doesn’t simply follow instructions. It interprets them.

Ask for subtle engine damage — you might get a cinematic explosion.
Ask for restraint — you might get overacting.
Ask for gunfire — it may redesign the aircraft to justify the physics.

Sound familiar?

New technology rarely behaves exactly how we expect. It pushes back. It improvises. It exposes gaps in clarity.

The breakthrough wasn’t “better prompting.”

It was changing strategy.

Instead of forcing the tool to do everything, I separated responsibilities:

• AI generates stable visual plates
• Short, controlled motion clips
• Effects and precision handled in post-production
• Tone and narrative decisions remain human

In other words: structure over force.
As an ice hockey videographer and former Army serviceman, realism and discipline matter to me. That mindset helped more than any technical setting. Restraint produced better results than spectacle.

The lesson?
Innovation isn’t about mastering the tool.

It’s about knowing where the tool ends — and leadership begins.

The final sequence is simple:
The bomber falls.
The pilot watches.
The score rises.
Cut to black.

No excess. No noise. Just control.

Sometimes leading new technology really does feel like herding kittens.

But with patience and structure, it lines up.
