🌿 A Wonderful Day at Caradon Woods 🌿

Our summer cohort from the Stories in Nature Project recently enjoyed a wonderful day immersed in nature at the beautiful Caradon Woods, with some members of the group also staying for an overnight camping experience.

It was a fantastic day filled with activities, learning and connection. Participants took part in woodworking workshops, made musical instruments from natural materials, learned how to safely set up a hammock, enjoyed wild swimming in the river and got involved in a variety of craft activities. There was also the opportunity to prepare and cook food over an open fire, bringing everyone together to share stories and experiences.

Most importantly, the day was full of laughter, conversation and friendship. It was a chance for people to step away from the pressures of everyday life, connect with nature and create lasting memories with one another.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a special experience. 💚

Odils Learning Foundation , Fotonow (CIC) and Greenwood Music CIC would like to thank National Lottery players and the The National Lottery Community Fund for enabling this impactful work to happen”.

From joy to heartbreak, we explore and celebrate the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression with the 2026 BFI FAN UK-wide season Rip It Up.

Cut and Paste!, our take on Rip It Up, uses film as a starting point to explore what it feels like to be young in the city.

📖 ZINE WORKSHOP
Friday 18th - Saturday 26th September
What does Plymouth feel like to you? Is the city a boring, grey place or is it full of surprises? Join us at Fotonow on a street photography and Zine-making workshop.

🎸 BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (12)
Saturday 26th - Tuesday 29th September
Javed is a Pakistani teenager who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. His life is changed when he discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen.

⚓ REMEMBRANCE (15)
Friday 2nd - Thursday 8th October
This rarely seen British film is set around the pubs and clubs of the then-notorious Union Street in 1980s Plymouth and follows a group of young Royal Navy sailors during their last 24 hours ashore before their ship sets sail.

💻 DIGITAL ZINE WORKSHOP
Saturday 3rd October
Drawing inspiration from archive footage and materials selected from The Box's collections, participants will discover different stories, perspectives and representations of the city through time and learn how to edit together a digital zine

Working in partnership with Fotonow (CIC) and The Box Plymouth, we will leave our expectations behind and see what happens.

This season is made possible with the support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from The National Lottery

In June our Blue Sparks group finished their media residency with a pop-up exhibition of their work and a takeover of Plymouth Arts Cinema!

They’d spent 15 weeks creating work about their lives here by the sea, making their own films, photography, animations and collages. Along the way there were photo walks, an interview with a local marine biologist, and a guided tour of the National Marine Aquarium

Over two days, 86 visitors came to see the exhibition. One of the group told us the project “taught me how to use cameras and made me lots of friends”

For the takeover, the group learned how film programming works and picked the screening themselves. Finding Nemo and The Spongebob Movie made the shortlist, but Ocean with David Attenborough won, and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth joined us in the audience.

Thank you to Plymouth Arts Cinema and National Marine Aquarium for welcoming the group into their spaces, to the team at Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, and to our volunteers for their help during sessions.

Blue Sparks is part of the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park Horizons project, which has been made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players with £11.6 million of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
