Of course there are tons of variations of talking heads you can add/use in your photography business, but if you are recording something like this for your client it oftens goes along these lines – especially if you are working with someone who doesn’t do this all the time… 😊

I love making this kind of talking head content if it’s an interesting person and topic…totally soul destroying if it’s a boring topic 😉
I think this can be powerful marketing content when mixed with other footage ❤️

Remember the Facebook ads course I went on and on about back in January? Well, I’m still going on and on about it, so thought I’d share some results 😀 (learn from my £)

During the course we set an ad running to a lead magnet. I ran these 4 creative variations targeting brand photographers – the idea is that you give the algorithm options and it will test which one your audience responds best to.

Tell me, which one do you think perform best out of these 4? Spoiler, the image ad did nothing! But out of the videos which did best?

I ran the ad for a week at £5 a day then dropped it to £1 a day for another week and I got 89 people sign up – maybe you were one of them?
*** One of those creatives brought in ALL the signups bar 1 *** I find that wild?! And it wasn’t the one I expected 🤷‍♀️

I’ll give you all a moment to guess before I reveal the answer and why I was surprised by it.

If you are curious about running ads I simply cannot recommend the course enough, I’ve done other courses, I’ve dabbled in ads for years, but having Kristin there live answering all my questions was just gold! Her next group starts March 16th, no I’m not a paid affiliate, just sharing because it was great. There were actually 3 photographers on the course and we are all now in her ongoing inner circle ads group.
Kristin runs ads for the big bands for a living and only recently started teaching UK small businesses.

🙈 I’ve done 8 talks for The Photography Show over 5 consecutive years and hugely enjoyed sharing training on the various stages, always about video for photographers, but this year I didn’t apply – is part of me thinking “what have you done!”… yeah maybe…. But I wanted to leave space for other speaking/training opportunities to float in. I’m a big believer in leaving space 😊

Soooo, if you know of lovely female photography groups/retreats/events that you think my training would fit into please do point them my way 😉

Anyway, I might still have something to offer anyone who does see me at the show this year!

You know I’m all about easy and not into gear! However…. there are some pros & cons of natural light vs. video lights when it comes to recording talking heads – either recording your self or for clients.

💛 Natural light
I love natural light, it’s free and easy and gives a relatable authentic look. However, on a day whit a mix of sun and clouds it can be crazy frustrating to try and record - continuously adjusting for the changing light. In the winter it can be hard to find enough light and the hours you can record in are limited.

💛 Video lights
I never ever enjoy packing gear, setting it up and breaking it down – such hassle! I do however enjoy the safety of knowing that I will have enough light and I do also like the looks you can create with video light(s).
I’ve had my big video light for a few years now and it has saved my bacon on many occasions, I’d definitely not be without it now.

What you do think? Are you natural light all the way?

Hands up if you’ve had this feeling – I definitely did, especially in my early days of filming!

This little truth fell out of one of the delegates at the end of yesterdays live training sessions and she is spot on!
Just filming what ever is going on does not necessarily equal lovely footage. And not planning for the edit at all when you are filming will make the edit harder 🙈

Sometimes it’s good to reflect on what makes our photography “our style” and then make sure we apply the same to our filming.
Is your work warm, soft and slow? Colourful, bright and fast? Dark and moody? Are you golden hour all the way?

Online course + 6 live calls, + live editing class + feedback on your footage + Field Notes (BTS modules of real sessions) + 20min 1-2-1 planning for your first video session £595

Live is a different energy, you create momentum, you actually make things happen and that’s when new habits form and new results emerge 😊

The live calls are extra content outside the onlince course. Before each call I will point out the modules to watch in advance (if you have time) – that way you are not faced with watching a big online course, just 1 or 2 modules as we go.
Because of the live calls we target it to your style, look at what you want to do.

Learning with others is always so much better 🥰

Shutter speed, f stop and ISO feel familiar and homely to photographers, while frame rate and resolution can feel 😩🤮

They sound geeky and unfamiliar but in lots of ways exposure for video is easier than photography because everything is decided for you – you broadly have two options, simple 🤷‍♀️

I’ll be breaking this down in easy photography relatable terms on todays training call and everyone will be surprised they ever thought it was difficult…😉

Tomorrow is January 13th - still very much the beginning.

Imagine having taken that first video step already — not in a pushy way, in a gentle ‘I’ve made a start’ kind of way and giving yourself the rest of the year to grow into it.

You will probably leave feeling a bit puzzled that this felt so easy, why did you put it of for this long ;)

None of these were on my shoot list, but I love them 🥰

Do you think sometimes it just shows when we are working our way through a “fake” list? And the unplanned pictures/footage looks so much more believable… because they are REAL moments just happening?

I love these ❤️ They are gentle and a true reflection of the energy of this venue in the cosy winter season. Perfect for reels either as standalone (they are all 8-10 seconds long and there were loads more) or can be mixed together.

Maybe when you first start offering video to your photography clients you feel like you have to “deliver” but honestly never be scared to bring your own ideas too?

Have you listened to the DOAC episode in December with James Clear? I’m obsessed! I took notes, I went and bought the new workbook he launched 🙈
Strong reminder that all our goals are in the actions. I have DM conversations with photographers every week that goes along the lines of ‘well no, I didn’t manage to try video at the last session, maybe I’ll try at the next one…’ and the reason they never manage to try it is because they haven’t taken the super crazy simple action to be READY to quickly record that 8 second piece of footage with the camera and lens they are already using 🤷‍♀️
