In all my years of visiting Serbia I've never been lucky enough to see this... until last week! A beautiful Honey Buzzard - a male I believe. You just never know what you might see whilst waiting by a drinking pool.

I received some lovely feedback from Lisa who joined my Bird of Prey Workshop with SMJ Falconry back in April. This was Lisa's first ever photography workshop so I'm honoured that she chose us!

"I was lucky enough to get a place on Paul’s Bird of Prey workshop in April. What an amazing day it was. Paul was welcoming and friendly and walking around checking the settings of your camera. Being my first ever workshop this was extremely helpful to me.. I can’t wait for the next workshop! Thank you Paul for an amazing bird of prey experience. I highly recommend to anyone & everyone 🙂 "

There's still places on my next workshop on 18th August. To book a place or for more information, Message Me on Facebook or Email Me at: [email protected]

The location is Oxenhope, near Haworth in West Yorkshire.

I like to give my followers what they ask for.

So today I braved the heavy rain in Leeds to test out a rain cover for bird photography.

Did it do the job? I'm currently editing the YouTube video which will be out very soon, so you can see how I got on.

When it comes to natural lighting for insect photography, do you prefer bright sun.. or cloudier days?

A few years ago I theorised that a warm but cloudy day might just work the best. I've since tried out this technique when I can with quite a bit of success. Shooting under a cloudier sky can get round a few problems, such as harsh shadows, burnt out whites and flightier subjects.

Personally I think the ideal situation is a warm afternoon with a thin layer of cloud. You're likely to get plenty of insects about, enough light for good camera settings, but softer lighting to work with. What do you think? Do you agree, or disagree?

Here's a couple of images taken under a cloudy sky.

If you'd like to see me trying this technique, and sharing my tips on macro photography, watch my latest YouTube video (linked in the Comments below).

A little story: It's photography related I promise...

When I first went to university in Swansea many moons ago, I found that most people around me were from the south of England. In fact, I was hard pressed to find anybody north of Bristol.

I'm originally from Blackpool and was constantly told how 'northern' I sounded. It didn't bother me. Made me different. So that was me - the 'northern' sounding bloke.

Fast forward 3 years to when I moved to Leeds and I was constantly told how 'posh' I sounded. LOL. I thought I just sounded normal..

Anyway the point of this is: PERCEPTION around GEAR. Whatever photography equipment you have, everyone will have a different perception of it. On my YouTube videos I've had comments ranging from "Of course you can take great pictures with £15K of gear" to "Why are you still using that you dinosaur?" Literally on the same video...

So don't worry too much about the gear you're using. Everyone will have a different take on it.

Just concentrate on YOU. Keep learning and keep improving with what you have. And above all - enjoy the journey!

Black headed Gull with nesting material. I had a nice clear blue sky for birds in flight this morning - although it was very bright sun, making it difficult to photograph white birds.

I had 3 sightings of a Bittern today at St. Aidans. Not bad for around 3 hours! The light was very harsh by the time I took this, and it's quite a big crop, but what a joy to capture!

Always a privilege to get even just a glimpse of this elusive bird.

Hoping I get another go soon!

I create a lot of wildlife photography content for YouTube, but you have to make time for yourself.

Here's me, this morning, at my local reserve - one of my favourite places in the whole world.

But can you guess which bird I'm waiting for?

Meet Tiffin, a beautiful male Kestrel at SMJ Falconry. Kestrels have the ability to keep their heads perfectly still whilst hovering, allowing them to pinpoint they prey with superb accuracy. Photographing Tiffin hovering is one of the highlights of my photography workshops with SMJ Falconry!
