Something landed in my inbox this week that made me stop for a moment.
First place in a Photocrowd competition โ€” Public Art and Sculpture. The image is one you might recognise if you've been following along for a while: Mary's Shell, Gordon Young's spiral sculpture on the beach at Fleetwood. Long exposure, incoming tide, a sky that was doing exactly what I needed it to do.
I don't enter competitions often. But I'm glad I entered this one.
What I keep coming back to isn't the result โ€” it's what the image represents. Mary's Shell is about an hour from where I live. I've driven past it dozens of times. It took me years to stop and really look at it. To ask myself what I wanted someone to feel when they saw it, rather than just recording that it existed.
That shift โ€” from documenting to feeling โ€” is everything. And it's something I think a lot of us in this community are working towards.
So here's my question for you: is there a piece of public art or sculpture near you that you've never photographed seriously? Something you walk or drive past without really seeing? I'd love to know what it is โ€” and even more, I'd love to see what you do with it if you decide to stop next time.
Drop it in the comments. Let's see what's out there.

๐Ÿฃ Quick one for Easter weekend โ€”
DxO are running a short promotion and I've got an exclusive code to share. New customers can get 20% off their software โ€” that includes PureRAW, PhotoLab, ViewPoint, and the Nik Collection โ€” using code RICHARD20 at checkout over at dxo.com.
Nik Silver Efex is a permanent fixture in my black and white workflow, and Color Efex gets used on pretty much every landscape edit I do. If you've been thinking about giving DxO a try, this is a decent opportunity.
Runs until 8th April. New customers only.
