Small properties need showcasing too!

This property was located on the outskirts of Preston and I was initially impressed with the drive up seeing the exterior stone and surrounding land. Sometimes less is more and in this property it definitely works well.

A sunset view of Piel Castle 🏰🌊

Piel Castle has watched over the edge of Morecambe Bay since the early 14th century, built by the monks of Furness Abbey to defend their valuable trading routes. What began as a simple landing point for grain, wine, and wool soon became a fortified outpost, a stone guardian protecting the abbey’s wealth from raiders and smugglers along the Furness coast.

The castle’s most turbulent moment came in 1487, during one of England’s last great medieval rebellions. Lambert Simnel, a Yorkist pretender backed by Irish forces, landed on Piel Island in his bold attempt to claim the throne. Though the uprising ultimately failed, the event secured Piel Castle a memorable place in the Wars of the Roses aftermath.

Through the centuries, the fortress weathered storms, shifting tides, and gradual decay. Its thick curtain walls, crumbling towers, and sweeping sea views still echo the island’s long history of trade, conflict, and coastal life.

Today, Piel Castle stands as a rugged relic of medieval Furness, a dramatic silhouette rising above rock, grass, and water. Whether approached by foot at low tide or by boat across the channel, the ruin always carries the same quiet power: a reminder of the monks, mariners, soldiers, and rebels who shaped this tiny island’s remarkable story.

A moody afternoon at Caerlaverock Castle 🏰🌫️

Caerlaverock Castle’s story begins in the 1200s, when it became the seat of the powerful Maxwell family on the Solway coast. Its distinctive triangular shape, deep surrounding moat, and thick red sandstone walls made it one of Scotland’s most striking strongholds, a fortress built for both defence and display.

In 1300, the castle faced one of its most defining moments. King Edward I of England marched north with a vast army during the Wars of Scottish Independence, laying siege to Caerlaverock in a campaign later immortalised in the Siege of Caerlaverock poem. Though heavily outnumbered, the Scottish garrison held the walls with remarkable resolve before the fortress eventually fell.

Over the centuries, Caerlaverock endured repeated attacks, shifting allegiances, and the turbulence of border warfare. By the 17th century, during the Civil War, the castle was deliberately dismantled to prevent further military use, leaving behind the atmospheric ruin we see today.

Just a short walk away lie the remains of the original 13th century castle, abandoned when its well ran dry. Surrounding wetlands now form part of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, where castle history and wild Solway landscapes blend seamlessly together.

Today, Caerlaverock stands as a hauntingly beautiful reminder of Scotland’s medieval past. Even under grey skies, its towers, moat, and weathered stone carry a quiet drama that makes the site unforgettable.

Golden hour on Piel Island 🌅

Piel Island’s story begins in the 12th century, when it was granted to the monks of Furness Abbey. They built a warehouse and trading station here, using the sheltered channel to bring in goods like grain, wine, and wool from overseas.

In the 14th century, the monks fortified the island with what we now call Piel Castle, a defensive outpost designed to protect their harbour from raiders, smugglers, and piracy along the Furness coast. The ruins that remain still mark the island’s most dramatic chapter.

Piel also played a role in English royal rebellion: in 1487, the pretender Lambert Simnel landed here with an invading force in his attempt to claim the throne, making the island an unlikely stage in the Wars of the Roses aftershock.

The island later became a base for pilots, customs officers, fishermen, and sailors, serving as a lookout point for shipping entering Morecambe Bay.

Just below the castle stands The Ship Inn, Piel Island, with roots going back to the 1700s. It has served monks, merchants, and mariners alike and it’s home to one of Britain’s most unique traditions: the landlord is crowned the “King of Piel,” a custom involving an oak chair, a helmet, a sword, and a lot of good humour. Visitors can even be “knighted” by taking part.

Today the island remains a unique mix of quiet coastline, deep history, and the warm welcome of a pub that’s been pouring pints for nearly three centuries.
