The Nurdle Hunters

Today I met with volunteers and contractors nurdling (picking up plastic pellets) at Whitley Bay beach. Everyone is nurdling! It's the hot new summer trend in North East England! And it's so good to see everyone working together. Every nurdle collected is a nurdle that isn't able to find its way into an animal's stomach.

However, an estimated 1 billion of these plastic pellets were spilled and only approximately 1% of them have been collected in to date - despite thousands of hours of work logged. The Government (nationally and locally), Environment Agency and Port of Tyne need to do more to clean up in the River Tyne, and quickly, before more reach our beautiful beaches.

Nurdle update. Following the spill of over a billion plastic nurdles into the River Tyne - reportedly the largest spillage of these in Northern Europe, there has been a meeting with the Port of Tyne today. Locals have demanded action and access to the river to continue the clean up.

The Nurdle Hunters

I've been documenting some of the amazing volunteers who have been cleaning up plastic nurdles after the recent, terrible spill at Port of Tyne.

The selection on this post are from Tynemouth, with photographs from other locations to follow.

Onshore, more help is needed, just after high tides each day, so please join in if you can.
