Norfolk Coast Project Study ###XVII - it’s been a while since I’ve posted something from the Norfolk Coast, but this is a photograph made with my Pentax 6x7. My first film photography post!

Peak District Project Study XIX - I presume Snake Road is so named because it snakes through the valley, not because of an abundance of snakes in the area… This picture is from Snake Plantation. It is my first ever “dead tree” cliche and I’m quite proud of it… I would just liked to have moved a little more to the right to create some separation between the dead tree and the taller trees to the right. I also have no idea why I set the aperture to f/1.4! School boy error.

Peak District Project Study XVIII The trig point by Cowper Stone with Stanage Edge beyond. This spot is popular with casual walkers as it’s easily accessible from the road. Whilst I was photographing there one such couple approached me and asked me what the white pillar was. They had thought it was perhaps a bird table! I like that idea!

One of the books I have been reading for inspiration photographing the Peak District NP. The book was first published in 1989 and the photographer is Ray Manley.

Peak District Project Study XVII - It’s interesting that the current vogue in landscape photography is to have front to back sharpness. The noted 19C photographer P H Emerson argued in his book Naturalistic Photography that the human eye has a limited depth of field and that we don’t see everything in sharp focus. Using a wide aperture in landscape photography for shallow depth of field has the added advantage of higher shutter speeds making hand held photography easier. Certainly this photograph would have been difficult to make if I’d had to use a tripod.

Peak District Project Study XVII - I don’t think minimalism is something I deliberately look for, but I do try to simplify. Sometimes this results in a minimalist picture sometimes not.

Peak District Project Study XVI - What difference does a title make? What if instead of just giving each picture a project name and number I came up with a title? These two promontories along Stanage Edge remind me of the Sentinels of Numenor aka the Argonath. Certainly the mist swirling around me when I made this picture made it feel like I was part of a scene from The Lord of The Rings! What if I titled this picture “Sentinels”? Does it make a difference to how it’s perceived?

Peak District Project Study XV - Apparently cotton grass likes wet boggy soil… something I can confirm from making this picture! Still the white tufts are an ideal subject for black and white photography. Rocks on Stanage Edge in the background.

Peak District Project Study XIV - Look closely at the centre of the horizon and you’ll be able to see Stanage Pole (I know, I need a longer lens!). A wooden pole has stood here for hundreds of years and marks the border of the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria, according to the Peak District National Park website. What caught my attention was how the clouds seem to have parted above the pole as though it is somehow casing some strange atmospheric disturbance (perhaps I have an over active imagination)!

Peak District Project Study XIII - Nelson’s Monument, Birchen Edge. I’d not been to Birchen Edge before. It’s a short gritstone edge not far from Chatsworth House. What makes it different is this 3 meter tall gritstone column (erected in 1810 by a local businessman in honour of Admiral Nelson according to Wikipedia). This picture is actually a crop of a photograph I made from much further back. I often find I need to revisit places before I’m happy with the pictures I make, but working with images that at first seem disappointing can be very useful in understanding what to look for on repeat visits. In this case I got lucky as I like this picture, albeit quite a small file from the 16MP OMD EM5 Mk 1.
