I love when families bring something personal into the session.

A favourite teddy, a little outfit, something that already means something to you. It makes the photos feel more like your baby and less like a setup that could belong to anyone.

And Tigger looks pretty settled in there too šŸ˜‚

You’ll see a lot of poses like this online…

What you don’t always see is the care behind them.

The way baby is supported, the way I take note of how comfortable they are. The breaks, the soothing, the patience.

Beautiful images matter, but how your baby is looked after matters much more.

I know a lot of women feel a bit unsure about maternity photos.

You’re heavily pregnant, probably not sleeping brilliantly, none of your normal clothes fit properly and then someone suggests standing in front of a camera šŸ˜‚

But this is why I love having beautiful dresses here for sessions. You don’t need to arrive knowing what suits you or how to pose. We can work that bit out together.

Sometimes it’s actually quite nice to see yourself looking like you again, rather than just feeling very, very pregnant.

Newborn sessions are never exactly the same because babies ouldn’t care less what I’ve planned for them šŸ˜‚

Some sleep through almost everything. Some want feeding every five minutes. Some only settle when they’re wrapped up. Some arrive wide awake and determined to inspect the studio.

I just work around them.

There’s no rush to get through a list of poses. We stop when we need to, feed when we need to, have cuddles when we need to, and usually get there in the end.

That’s pretty much how newborn sessions should be, I think.

I do love a simple maternity shoot.

Jeans, white tops, nothing too fancy, just the two of you and that bump in the middle of everything.

There’s a nice honesty to photos like these because they don’t feel overdone. They just look like you.

And I think that’s what I’d want if it was me. Something I could look back on in ten years and still really like, rather than something that felt very ā€œmaternity shootā€ at the time.

It's the little (and big!) interactions that really make portraits special.

It's not about grinning awkwardly at the camera, its about your real life connections.

How many times have you thought that you must update your family photographs, then before you know it, a year has whizzed by and you still haven't got round to it?

This is your sign to get on with it! Before you've all changed, yet again.

Froggy!

The marmite pose of newborn photography. It's both loved and hated.

The things to remember with this pose are:

Baby is always full supported (supporting hands are edited out)

I never force a baby into this position, for the first few weeks, this pose is actually very natural for them after their nine months curled up in the womb.

Not all baby's will do this pose and the slightest bit of resistance I will stop.

What do you think? Is this a pose you love? Hate? Love to hate?
