Photography is all about being in the right place at the right time to capture nature looking its best. On this morning, as the colours from the sunrise slowly developed over the loch, imagine my surprise and shock when I turned around and saw this view! Soft pastel pinks, wispy clouds, still waters and beautiful reflections. A scene to melt your heart at Eglinton Loch in North Ayrshire.

A rare evening shoot for me at a lonely Martyr's Monument on the moors. Close by, a skylark was busy singing its heart out and filling the air with sweet melody, whilst a gentle breeze ruffled the surrounding tall grasses. A natural performance I was happy to enjoy. The sky looked promising but little did I know I was in for another special treat. This time it was to be a virtuoso performance of colour and light after the sun slipped below the horizon. At its peak display, the sunset was spectacular and breathtakingly wonderful. When the shutter clicked on the camera, I was simply lost for words at Airds Moss in East Ayrshire.

The mist was atmospheric, the stillness and simplicity, simply sublime. A different world where sky and water merge into one. You would be forgiven for thinking this is another black and white photograph, because it definitely appears like that on first viewing, but it's not. I framed this view around the wonderful green reeds, and their reflections, growing out of the water only a few feet from the camera. Through the shroud of mist, the trees standing in the background are barely noticeable but their presence is surely felt. A minimalist view of the world and a tranquil morning to be out with the camera at Glenbuck Loch in East Ayrshire.

Fantastic to see my image of the beautiful reflections at Glenbuck Loch, located near Muirkirk in East Ayrshire, published in the July issue of Black+White Photography magazine (Issue No. 316 which is currently on sale). It's always wonderful to stand on the shore listening to the hypnotic sound of the waves as they break. If you stop and listen hard enough you can even hear the little pebbles and larger grains of sand tumble and collide as they rush up the beach. It's a special place created by nature's raw energy but there's a freshness and bite to the wind this morning. Change is coming. A low weather front is approaching from the west, with much-needed rain in the forecast. You can feel it in the air at Irvine Beach in North Ayrshire.

The dawn chorus lifted my spirits as I waited patiently on the riverside for the light to develop. Nature always brightens the soul and reminds us of who and what we really are. After several minutes of standing at my viewpoint looking upstream on the river, nature performed its alchemy. Greys transformed into pinks and reds followed by shades of vibrant orange and yellows. The sunrise was beautiful on the River Ayr at Failford in East Ayrshire.

There was a freshness to the morning air, with a gentle breeze brushing my face, as I waited patiently. The rushing water, several feet below, was nature's music for the soul and I could easily have forgotten why I was there at just after 4am. I was of course waiting for the light whilst breathing in the atmosphere of the place, the dawn chorus echoing loudly from all the trees by the riverside. A slow burner, the colours of the sunrise reflected wonderfully on the surface of the water. Pink, orange and yellow hues appeared as the light touched the clouds in the sky. The show was soon over on the River Ayr at Oswald's Bridge, near Auchincruive in South Ayrshire.

Fantastic news to share! Two of my images have been shortlisted by the judges in the black & white round 2 of Amateur Photographer of the Year 2026. This is a highly prestigious international competition and I'm absolutely delighted. The first image is Poppies #2 which was taken in my garden and the second is of a tree cradling the moon. I will find out in about 3 weeks time if either photo will make the top 10 or be published in the magazine. The standard of entry is fantastic and both images are winners for me!

A perfect morning with a perfect mirror-like reflection of the sunrise. This is the scene that greeted me just after 4am when I first setup the camera and framed a view along the loch. The distant colours were wonderful to see against the silhouette of the trees. No need to do any editing on this image taken at Eglinton Loch near Kilwinning in North Ayrshire.

I was up and out for just after 2am to arrive at the location in plenty of time to capture the 'Blue Hour' light. Clouds were moving directly towards the camera from the east and in my mind I always saw this view as a black and white photograph. Light levels were really low so the long exposure of 30 seconds has captured and conveyed this motion in the sky. What a wonderful scene to behold and it was pure magic to be out with the camera at Glenbuck Loch near Muirkirk in East Ayrshire.
