The statue of Allan Ramsay (1685 -1758) which stands majestic on the corner of West Princes Street Gardens at the foot of the mound.
I just love the twilight backdrop of Edinburgh Castle behind the monument.
I should point out that I DO have a very good camera but a few years ago I realised that the cameras on iPhones were ridiculously brilliant and, because I always had my phone on me - and not a camera - I found myself taking photos with the phone and being utterly thrilled with the results.
I’ve always loved photography and it’s been a huge ambition of mine to take it further but restraints on time and money have never allowed me to pursue it.
A wee bit about Allan Ramsay:
He was notable for establishing the UK's first circulating library on the Royal Mile and was involved in the revival of Scots vernacular poetry.
The ten-foot high Carrara marble statue by Sir John Steell shows him wearing a night-cap rather than a wig, an allusion to the fact he had been a wig-maker as a young man. The ornate Binny sandstone plinth is by David Bryce R.S.A.
