The first look at In Focus 001 is here. 🎬

Meet Christabel, a singer, vocal teacher, radio presenter, and podcaster in Brighton and Hove, someone who’s rarely just switched off.

This is the trailer for the first episode of In Focus, a new filmmaking project exploring real people and the lives they’re living. Each episode follows one person, told however their story needs to be told.

Not gonna lie, this whole project’s been one of my favourites this year 👀

QLVR wanted something real for this one, no posed studio shots, just people out at actually reacting to the shoe 👟 Genuinely one of my favourite briefs to work, because you’re not setting anything up, you’re just watching for it.

That’s honestly the hard part 😅 You don’t get a second go at someone mid stride, so it’s a lot of standing around waiting, then a split second where you just have to trust your gut and go.

Some of the strongest moments from the whole project have come from exactly that, being in the right spot before something happens rather than reacting after it’s already gone. You learn pretty quickly to read a crowd, spot who’s about to try something on, and just be ready 🎥

I think that’s why it works so well too, it doesn’t look like an ad because it wasn’t shot like one. People can tell the difference, even if they couldn’t explain why.

There’s a moment on most shoots where I stop filming the whole product and just get close 👀

It sounds like a small thing, but it usually ends up being some of the strongest footage from the day. Wide shots show what something is. Close ups show what it’s actually made of.

With a product like this, the detail is where the quality lives, the stitching, the texture, the finish. Zooming out loses all of that, it just becomes another item moving through frame.

So when I’m shooting for a brand, I always make sure to build in time for this, even if it’s not what was originally planned. It’s usually the footage that ends up doing the most work 🎥
