Some skills don't change and some do! We often use quite different solutions to achieve photographic tasks now. Here's a shot I made for a supplier of Yacht interior soft furnishings, long before the digital age. A lot of power was needed to provide enough light to illuminate the large format film we had to use. Not easy to come by on a yacht!

The task is so much easier now, that it is sometimes tempting to be lazy and not add light where it can make a real difference, in stead using the amazing ability of modern professional cameras to manipulate light artificially.

Apologies for a rather low resolution scan from a long time ago.

Here's a hint about messy backgrounds. If you have to shoot in a messy environment, it might help if you can use a bright spotlight or floodlight, perhaps in the evening, so that daylight isn't a problem. Even cheap work lights and powerful hand torches can be an interesting way to isolate your subject.

From half a mile away, you have to look twice to figure out what’s happening here.

Two ships — a cruise liner and a container ship — passing each other so closely they seem to merge, sliding together inside the green starboard buoy. From this distance, there’s no space between them.

There are small coincidences in the composition: the green buoy echoing the green funnel, the subtle blue tones connecting the cinema screen to the blue containers. I like that there's a tropical scene on the open-air cinema on this chilly day on Southampton Water.

🏎️ I’m going to Goodwood Festival of Speed again in June, as I do most years, to ‘collect’ pictures of cars which we use for our bodyshop website work. I go as soon as it opens on the first day, and race round the stands to try and avoid the crowds, who inevitably block angles and perspectives on the vehicles.

Some of the concept cars are amazing and I discovered a lovely trait of a new lens I bought last year. It makes excellent ‘suns stars’ where there are bright highlights..

Sometimes I get lucky. The timing of a commission and the weather on the day it is convenient to do the shoot, don’t always line up. In the autumn, that starts getting rare, and autumn was a lovely time for this shoot at Seaford College. It was early October with southern England at it’s best, with enough recent rain for verdant green grass, and a classic calm sunny day for flying a drone.

This shot has been used a lot!

I have, until very recently, looked upon the 'standard' lens as something I would generally only use in working environments and the studio. A bit of a boring view perhaps. (It was the lens which you bought with your 35mm camera back when Zooms weren't quite a thing yet. About a 40 to 50mm lens for 35mm cameras).

I seem to have changed. I've been keeping mine on the camera for street, landscapes and on holiday as well. Somehow I'm seeing things differently. Not sure why?

I was in Zurich a few weeks ago walking around in the spring sunshine and saw most of it as a 'standard' view.

Sometimes the best shot, wasn’t shot. It was a frame from the video captured at the time of the combined video and stills shoot. Is that OK? If it’s ‘enough’ for the purpose, it is OK.

🎬 Shot in 4K and with a high bit rate to ensure good video capture and with the end use not being too taxing, ie. Screen use only, it’s more than good enough.

✈️ Quadrant Pilot brought us in to produce a corporate video and capture stills at their West Sussex facility — covering every aspect of their pilot training programme, from classroom briefings to hands-on simulator sessions.

Shooting inside the simulator cockpit is always a challenge — the lighting is low, designed for realism, not cameras. We worked with the ambient cockpit lights to showcase the instruments and displays at their best, with a touch of accent lighting to bring out the subject without compromising the atmosphere.

Video and photography delivered side by side — efficiently, and without disrupting their training schedule.

🔧✨ Sometimes it’s all about the clean, detailed product shots. Nothing beats a high-quality photograph when it comes to showing off the craftsmanship and design of a product.

Here’s Entel’s DT844 Marine Radio — just one example from the full range we’ve captured for them. Precision, clarity, and consistency across the board 📸

Need product photography that really sells what you make? Let’s talk.
