📸 TIP THURSDAY

Repeating patterns can create a beautifully ordered composition—but sometimes, breaking that pattern is what makes a photograph really stand out.

Look for a single subject, colour, shape or object that contrasts with everything around it. This interruption creates a natural focal point and gives the viewer somewhere specific for their eye to land.

In this image, the single red tulip breaks through a sea of yellow flowers, immediately drawing your attention and giving the otherwise repetitive scene a clear focal point.

✨ This week's challenge: look for patterns in your surroundings and see if you can find something that breaks them. It could be a different colour, shape, size or even a person moving through the scene.

Our eyes are naturally drawn to repetition, which makes patterns a fantastic tool for creating strong and visually interesting photographs.

Look for repeating shapes, lines, colours or textures in buildings, architecture, nature or everyday objects. Filling the frame with a repeating pattern can create a sense of rhythm and order, while changing your perspective can reveal patterns that aren't immediately obvious.

In this image, the sweeping architectural lines create a repeating pattern that draws the eye through the frame, while the curved perspective adds a sense of movement and depth.

Look around you for repeating patterns and try filling your entire frame with them. Experiment with different angles and focal lengths to see how you can change the pattern and create a more striking composition.
