Always my favourite bird of all time😍

Popped into Warnham LNR yesterday afternoon for a bit of birding. Incredibly lucky that as I walked into the hide, I could see everyone’s cameras pointed at the post, and this Kingfisher was sat there posing wonderfully! It even dived into the water a couple of times and caught a fish, smashing it against the post before swallowing it.

This individual is an adult male, with bright orange legs, vibrant blue feathers (showing it’s an adult) and a black lower mandible (red in females).

If 5 years ago you told me I’d be speaking in front of 65 people most days (without worrying too much!) I wouldn’t have believed you! Public speaking certainly doesn’t come naturally to me and it’s taken lots of practice to get where I am now. I’m certainly not perfect but I’m lucky enough to be surrounded with people who I can learn from and be inspired by 📢

I think for anyone that’s looking for a career in conservation, people skills and being able to communicate clearly are so important. As an early-career conservationist, I’ll always try to be open and authentic when it comes to speaking about my journey so far. To give some context, when I was at school just putting my hand up to ask a question would make me anxious. When I started making videos back in lockdown, presenting in front of a camera was terrifying. I can’t even watch any of those videos anymore 😅

Fast forward a few years and with practice, it’s become slightly easier. Being able to talk about something I love (birds if you hadn’t guessed already) certainly helps too! 🦅

Still got plenty of photos to edit from my trips to the Isle of May back in May and June, but this one made me smile in particular! 😅

Puffins are such little characters and it was a real joy to watch these two interacting and preparing their burrow for the breeding season.

Great to be back at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve today, leading a Beginners Bird Walk! We had a lovely group, with lots of fantastic questions and enthusiasm. 🤩

Our 3-hour walk had many highlights including a young Ringed Plover chick right in front of the hide, with both parents calling to it to come back! We also saw 4 Greenshank, 2 summer plumage Sanderling, Tufted Duck with young, Common Tern with chicks, and Med Gulls.

Looking forward to going back soon!

Just going through my photos from my trip to RSPB Loch Leven a few weeks back, and was reminded of this amazing wildlife experience. 🤩

and I were sat in the hide and suddenly all the Lapwing began displaying and mobbing an extremely fast raptor. Flying right towards us, we could see this of course was a Peregrine Falcon, with some lunch in its talons. I believe this is a Black-headed Gull, unsurprisingly being there’s a breeding colony there.

It all happened so quickly, but I was able to capture this photo of this bird zipping past after it had caused so much chaos!

Such a fab weekend catching up with lots of amazing people, meeting new people, and feeling like a proper community!

Highlights include co-hosting a panel discussion with for the Osprey Leadership Foundation Hub on being a woman in birding, talking about what amazing work is being done already to improve the space, what needs work, and how to inspire the next generation of girls to get into birding. Thank you so much to my fantastic and inspiring panelists Amira, , and . 💜

I know some people think that Birdfair is about promoting yourself or just buying holidays abroad but it’s so much more. It’s the only time in the year that those with a passion for wildlife can come together from all over the UK (and world) as people, share memories, ideas, and most importantly have fun. That’s so important when working or being involved in something like conservation that can often be depressing and a battle at times! I’m so pleased to see more young people there than ever and the amazing work that Osprey Leadership Foundation has done to create a community where everyone can feel in a supportive and empowering space. Next year a youth slot on the Osprey Stage! 🤩

When I woke up yesterday on my day off, I definitely wasn’t expecting to end the evening on national BBC News! 😅

It was a real pleasure to speak with BBC News Senior Correspondent Christian Fraser about new research that provides evidence for something we’ve known for a long time: Swifts often return to the same nest site year after year. The research also showed that Swifts are often more faithful to their nest than to each other - something that’s common across many bird species.

We talked about what makes Swifts so special, as well as the steep decline they’ve experienced, with populations falling by around two-thirds over the last three decades. The biggest drivers are the loss of suitable nesting sites and declining insect populations.

The findings also strengthen the case for making Swift bricks mandatory in all new housing developments. At around £30 per house, they’re a simple, cost-effective addition that can provide nesting opportunities for breeding pairs for many years. It is ridiculous that these are still not mandatory and have been turned down by the labour government and House of Lords.

If you’d like to help Swifts, there are plenty of ways to make a difference:
🪽 Install a Swift nest box and play Swift calls during the breeding season to attract in a new pair.
🌿 Let part (or all!) of your garden grow wild.
💧 Create a pond to support insect life.
📢 Support fantastic Swift campaigners like .
🐦 Support conservation organisations such as the and your local wildlife trust.
🌍 Champion landscape-scale habitat restoration and reduced pesticide use.

My first ever encounter with Arctic Tern whilst staying on the Isle of May!

Great to see these birds breeding back on the island after a couple years absence. To think what these birds see is incredible, with them travelling from their Arctic breeding grounds to the Antarctic in time for another summer. What a life! 🤩
