Hi, I’m Bill Bishop, a commercial photographer based in Birmingham, West Midlands.

I produce images for design agencies, and also work directly for businesses and brands. I usually shoot on location and have worked throughout the UK and Europe, but I'm equally at home in a studio. I'm also a graphic designer with 20+ years' experience, so I've always had a thorough understanding of visuals and the design process. It's my birthday! 🥳 I know I don't look a day over 25!!

Whilst I might be a smidge older than 25, Arcanum Design Solutions Ltd is 25 years old today.

It seems a lifetime away, me and my Bondi Blue iMac (Google it!) designing in QuarkXpress.

Then 20 years ago I started offering photography to my design clients, and I am fortunate to still be working with some of those very same clients.

So a big thank you to everyone who has supported me on my journey (sounds like I'm on XFactor!)

I may celebrate with cake!

Being a good photographer isn't about cameras, lights or Photoshop. It's about problem solving...

I was hired by ABB to take team headshots for 80 people in a day. Not a problem.

I was then told they need to be photographed in 4 different locations:

• In a modern office setting
• Against a white background
• Against a grey background
• Against a corporate graphic background

Logistically this was impossible in the time allowed.

So I shot everyone in one location on a white background, then cut them out and placed them on each of the other 3 backgrounds in Photoshop.

Problem solved = Happy client.

Photographs can convey a feeling faster than, and sometimes even more effectively than words can. A photograph can make the viewer see the world the way the photographer sees it.

I thought it would be interesting to dive back into the archives of over 60,000 images I have delivered to clients since 2006, and just pick some of my favourite shots.

Shot 8: CPW – 2026

Sometimes a mistake can make a photo. Whilst photographing 50 CPW staff members, my studio light aimed at my white backdrop misfired, meaning instead of a pure white background, this image had a graduated grey background. Instead of deleting it, I processed it as a more moody black and white shot. One of my favourite shots of the year so far.

Shot 7: Green Square Brand Design – 2024

I photograph many agricultural vehicles, working in the fields, but this one was very special. This is a British & European Tractor Pulling Champion and his 5000bhp tractor. Tractor Pulling is an amazing spectacle, and the noise! - how about a racing tractor with 2 methanol burning Spitfire engines bolted into it!

I will be photographing the final UK & European round in a few weeks time.

Shot 6: Beth & Chris – 2024

I am not a wedding photographer, but I get asked by family and friends to photograph a handful of weddings a year. This was particularly special as it was my niece and her new husband.

I really liked this shot of the 3 strong and confident ladies of KAG, sharp-suited, striding purposefully toward the camera, Reservoir Dogs style.

Shot 1: Terry (my neighbour) – 2018

This was a personal project where I wanted to photograph senior gentleman in a specific style. I then colour graded these images using a cinematic teal and orange colour palette.

Over the weekend, I was asked to take a headshot for a young dancer who is performing in a local Panto this Christmas.

It was a tight deadline, so I set up my portable studio in my lounge on Sunday evening and delivered the edited images on Monday morning.

As well as using this for future castings, it will be printed in the Panto programme for all to see.
