I've had the most amazing last day of my respite break on Dartmoor . Shall put up another post later but this one deserves a set all of it's own.
It's the Royal Oak at Meavy ( quercus robur - oak tree , not the pub of the same name ).
This amazing tree has been on my.must visit list for years and we finally met today , spent 20 minutes in each others company and I've promised to visit again.
The tree is at least 900 years old and possibly 960 or 970. It's a remarkable presence , entirely hollow , with just three thinnish strands of bark ( and the layer underneath which name eludes me ) connecting it to mother earth. It's the Oldest oak in Devon , originally a gospel tree ( where people communed prior to the church , which is also ancient , being built ). The tree has various accoutrements to help keep it going , at this declining point in its life. struts and bars and a very sensible iron railings all around to prevent damage from keen visitors .

Imagine waking in the middle of the night, in a camp bed in an ancient Dartmoor church , and thinking how lovely it would be to see what the stained glass looks like from the outside , with the light shining out, rather than in. Well, I just did and have been outside dressed in my oodie and pjs , with a torch . It's every bit as beautiful as I could've hoped ( even with the rain slanting down ) and , just as this respite break has brought me more wisdom, and inner peace , on this incredible journey of life , life also always has a way of shedding light upon things in unexpected ways, if you're open to them.

I've arrived safely at St Mary's Walkhampton , for 3 nights of champing ( church camping for those not in the know ). It feels amazing to be here . Bed is remarkably comfy and I have all home comforts ( mostly ), little fridge , toaster , kettle , indoor toilet , WiFi ( really 🤓 ) and utter peace . There are 3 ladybirds I've found so far to keep me company but I'm thoroughly enjoying my time already . There will be camera photos when I get home.

A few little things seen at Meeth Nature reserve today ( 8/4/2026 ). Had such a lovely visit with Ray , on what has turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far.
I’ve added Holly Blue to my butterfly species seen , and spotted my first Violet Oil Beetle of the year . Also a reed bunting but the camera refused to focus on that.
We had a lovely picnic by the pond , and were surrounded by butterflies, bees , and birdsong. Truly wonderful .
