Next month I will be running my first photography workshop. I’ve created 3 sessions designed to showcase what I think is the best of Dartmoor National Park throughout the year.
These sessions are 3 hours long, featuring a short walking route, with the ethos being gentle learning time in nature, slowing down and creating beautiful compositions of nature.
You don’t need to have a fancy camera or loads of experience. If you are new to this then you’ll be encouraged, and shown some pointers you can take away with you to create images you’re proud of.

There are still some spaces left on the first one that’s taking place in late April.

It will feature a walk through some stunning bluebell carpets (hopefully) and along a winding stretch of a Dartmoor river, all beneath the canopy of some ancient woodland.
I can’t guarantee the bluebells, as Mother Nature makes her own plans, but the walk will be in a location, and at a time of year, that I’ve reliably found beautiful bluebells previously.
Any device you want to bring is fine, I can recommend some apps to get more out of your smartphone camera, but if you want to try a camera out then I can help organise hire of one.
There are plenty more details of what you can expect on my website, but feel free to DM me if you’ve got any questions 📸

I've made the decision to shut down my page. At the end of this month I'll be turning it off. I will still be sharing photos on my website www.photographsbytom.com and via my instagram account https://www.instagram.com/tomdauben/ Since giving Facebook another go I'm just not feeling the love for being back on here generally, and I want to do fewer things well. so my focus will be on those other outlets.

I've got some exciting photographic plans for 2026, some workshops on Dartmoor, and some other things planned for later in the year, so do stay in touch if you want to see what comes from those.

Thanks for those of you who have followed along on here, don't be a stranger.

A few images from my ongoing project documenting the lone trees of Dartmoor National Park.
Once much of the moor was covered in luscious temperate rainforest, but deforestation from the Bronze Age for construction, firewood and agriculture resulted in it dwindling significantly. Now only a handful of sites remain of that habitat of any reasonable size (reasonable still being tiny in comparison).

These lone trees that survive despite the pressures they’re under always amaze me. The amount of livestock that could graze and eat them before they mature beyond being a sapling, the weather conditions that batter and shape them, and the variety of too much or too little water that climate change is throwing at them all the time.

Yet still they grow.

None are the same, all are incredibly characterful, and I always enjoy encountering one to create an image of it.

More of these images will appear at some point, who knows what I’ll do with them eventually - I’d like to think it could turn into a zine, collection of prints or something else, but for now, I hope you enjoy this selection 🌳

🇮🇸 A Fujifilm recipe designed for Iceland 🇮🇸

Here are a set of images created using a new recipe I’ve made, designed to be versatile to work with the massive range of subjects Iceland throws at a photographer, from a bright yellow lighthouse, to many coloured corrugated houses, white snow and ice, or beautiful sunrises.

This recipe is created to be colour accurate, but with a little injection of style. You could increase this by turning on the grain settings if that’s your preference.

Scroll through the images to get to the recipe, and if you decide to use it I’d love to see the images you create. It won’t just work in Iceland, it’s pretty versatile, and I can see myself using this one quite a bit.

I’m trying out a new post format here, would love to know what you think in the comments please :)

We’ve just returned from a few days in Iceland. It was our second visit to this beautiful country, and it won’t be our last.
For this trip I created two new Fujfilm recipes, they evolved during the course of the trip, but they proved really useful. One was very versatile, a colour profile based on the Reala film simulation, and the other wasn’t versatile in the slightest, but for good reason. I think photographing the aurora is possibly the most testing thing I’ve done as a photographer, and trying to create images of it without post processing made it even trickier, but I think I got there with a bit of adaptation during the trip. These two new recipes will have their own posts with all the details in the near future.

For now, I hope you enjoy some images from our trip - there will be plenty more coming soon, sorry if the Dartmoor images get a bit neglected, I’ll do my best to mix things up.

If anyone wants to use the recipes before I share them let me know in the comments and I’ll DM you the details.

Textures are something I’m increasingly enjoying photographing. At times they’re better suited to black and white, others need colour to make them pop. Sometimes it’s the way the light catches the bark on a tree, how grasses are moving in the wind, or perhaps how rocks create the foreground for a wider scene. Whatever the format I do find myself wondering what others would think of me if I ever met someone whilst knelt down seemingly photographing absolutely nothing… 🙃
