OBSERVATION

In RECON, observation is everything.

It is not simply about seeing. It is about paying attention to what changes, what remains the same, and what suddenly feels different.

Following an AC75 campaign means looking beyond the boat itself. Every day can reveal something new: a structural modification, a subtle change in configuration, a different sail setup, a detail on the rudder or foil, an unexpected sound, or an anomaly during a sailing session.

But the people around the boat are equally important.

Engineers, sailors, boat captains and shore crew develop routines. When those routines change, they can become signals — the way they move, what they inspect, what they carry, or how they react to something unexpected.

Photography captures these observations and creates a visual record that can be compared day after day. Patterns emerge, small differences become visible, and details that might otherwise go unnoticed begin to tell a story.

And observation works both ways.

Observing the boat.
Observing the people.
Observing the routines.
Observing the changes.

While we observe the boat and the people around it, we are also being observed.

Two sides. One constant: observation.

A Recon's diary. Ferragosto.

In Italy, August 15th is a sacred day. It combines the ancient Roman tradition of Feriae Augusti with the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. So, until after Ferragosto, we won’t be photographing Luna Rossa’s progress on the water again.

This month began with heartbreaking news. As many of you already know, Carlo Borlenghi passed away.

Since 2004, when we first crossed paths in Valencia, I have had the privilege of sharing countless regattas, events and dinners with Carlo. A love of good food was another thing we had in common.

Here in Cagliari, we often found ourselves following Luna Rossa’s every move — Carlo as the team’s photographer, and me as Recon. But above all, what I will carry with me is the privilege of witnessing Carlo at work.

He saw things that, even when standing right beside him, the rest of us could barely imagine. He invented compositions on the fly, measured the light almost from memory, and somehow was always exactly where he needed to be.

Carlo carried Luna Rossa in his heart.

These photographs, taken over the past few days in August, are for you, Carlo.

A Recon's diary. July 2026

July was defined by consistency on the water. The seabreeze delivered every day, while the expected Mistral has yet to make an appearance.

The team also introduced the new M2-1 mainsail, continuing Luna Rossa's ongoing development program. All of it under intense summer temperatures that made several sessions particularly demanding.

The month also produced two of its most dramatic moments.

The first was a significant nose dive, with the bow burying deep into the water. I was able to capture the entire sequence, frame by frame.

Later in the month, Luna Rossa came close to capsizing during another training session. Peter Burling reacted early, moving clear before the boat hit the water.

July combined steady progress, new equipment and a reminder that, even in training, the margin between control and instability can be extremely small.

A Recon's Diary – Day 10

I’m shooting in 39°C heat, under the harsh light of summer with the sun at its zenith. These conditions leave little room for photographic play.
After a while, the background changes. Behind the city of Cagliari, a dark plume of smoke begins to rise. As it thickens and the Mistral pushes it along, it filters, reshapes, tints, and redraws the landscape through which the AC75 appears.
An environmental disaster alters the atmosphere: the smoke softens the light and calms the contrasts. It is not an effect I sought, but the visible trace of a wildfire transforming the landscape.

A Recon's Diary. June 2026.

June is drawing to a close. A month of fine-tuning, navigating between the familiar and the big new: the same Silver Bullet, but considerably lighter; a crew with some new faces; the Mistrale wind, which has yet to make its appearance; the heatwave that has also reached Cagliari; and finally, a brand-new rudder.
We, too, are navigating between the new and the familiar, constantly improving our images, the technical data we collect, and our eyes, which are always searching for what shouldn't be seen.
