Winter is on its way - I love a clear, crisp and quiet winter night. The shimmer of the snow crystals, the distant howl of coyotes. And the time between long exposures to contemplate our tiny existence is this unfathomably vast universe.

With a huge solar storm hitting the earth I arrived on the beach before dark. Unfortunately - the peak of the storm arrived before dark. Nevertheless - a night out under the stars is never a waste….

Day to night time lapses are tricky - particularly when the aurora varies the brightness. This one was done manually checking the histogram and changing settings accordingly.

A careful observer may notice the water level rising about a foot - the camera and tripod recovery was interesting.

Worn by time and bathed in borrowed light, she stands beneath an eternal sky—once a keeper of life, now alone and fading, forgotten by the world but not by beauty.

Lit by my nearby oil rig - this barn and the sky above were a challenge to edit. Learnt some new techniques and I’m pretty happy with the results.

Say hello to STEVE….

STEVE is a rare, aurora-like atmospheric glow that appears as a narrow purple or mauve ribbon stretching east–west across the sky.

STEVE stands for:

Strong
Thermal
Emission
Velocity
Enhancement

Unlike an ordinary aurora—which is primarily produced by energetic particles raining into the atmosphere—STEVE is associated with an extremely hot, fast-moving stream of charged gas in the upper atmosphere, usually south of the main auroral oval.
