Milky Way photos I took last night from Harling Point. Unfortunately the low lying clouds and light pollution weren't ideal conditions for capturing it. Regardless, it was a nice calm evening to be out stargazing by the ocean.

It was very cool to photograph this male Wilson's Phalarope and its chicks. The phalarope, itself, is a rare bird for Southern Vancouver Island. Of greater interest, though, is that it's thought to be the first time a pair of them have had chicks in this area. Their typical breeding migration takes them over southeastern BC, but not as far west as the island.

Also of interest, is that phalaropes reverse the usual appearance and s*x roles in birds. Females are larger and more colourful than males. They also take the lead in courtship and then leave the males to incubate the eggs and care for the young.
