In a world driven by acquisitive hurry, the delicate still-life images of the Canadian artist Shira Gold [ ] capture a deep sense of tranquillity as moths glide in lazy spirals and petals float lightly on the surface of water dark with quiet possibility. The value of her artwork does not come from the cost of its elements. Dead moths, fallen petals, scraps of paper – these are not symbols of wealth and status. What invests them with worth is their associative potential, their ability to suggest and to remind. As these modest fragments drift and arc across the frame, they beckon for memory to join them in an intimate dance of recall, reminding us of moments of genuine pleasure free from the anxiety of getting and losing. The pleasures of being, connecting, and sharing.

Shira Gold speaks to Talking Pictures about artmaking as meditation and the sense of wellbeing it can bring to share with others.

Colours are wrapped around me on my studio walls on another gloomy rain soaked day. It’s quiet and I get lost in the layers of saturated blooms reminding me of the seasons that have been left behind and what beauty awaits in a handful of months.

It is very grey and rainy outside… but in the studio I am surrounded by reminders of summer. When I was younger I wasn’t aware of how much colour impacted my mood. Now, as I incorporate more of it in my work and surround myself with so many varied palates I have become keenly aware of how it affects me. This is a detail from the piece “Cultivating Playscapes” from my series “Confessions of an Untamed Mind Garden.” Swipe to see the full piece.

It’s finally here!
A series that I have been knocking around in my head for years. Conceptualizing the work to it being actualized has been a uniquely challenging, but equally rewarding process.

Little Distance

Negative spaces. Fragmented landscapes. Thought architecture. Biographical shapes. Geometric rhythms. These are themes that each of the five artists in Little Distance explores in abstract works rich with colour and motion.

In different ways, these artists acknowledge the challenge of finding concrete meaning in the space between private and public experiences. There is always a ‘little distance’ between perception and reality, or between intention and impact. In exploring these uncertain spaces, the artists use curiosity and instinct to give shape to experiences that often struggle to find expression.
