I got a reminder today that my very first newborn session was eight years ago, and I wanted to share a bit about my journey mastering newborn photography.
On the left is that very first session, full of good intentions. I had no idea how to pose a baby, and most of my images were out of focus. I was a beginner, brand new to newborn photography, and booked often only because my prices were very low. On the right is one of my recent sessions, showcasing the skill, care, and experience that come with years behind the camera. My prices now reflect the quality of my work, though to be honest, I still charge less than I should!
Since that first session, I have honed my skills, trained with professionals, competed in and won national and international awards, and earned several professional designations. I’m an Accredited Professional Photographer in newborn photography with the Professional Photographers of Canada, where I have received multiple prestigious provincial and national awards. My work has also received international recognition, earning many awards in competitions celebrating excellence in newborn portraiture.
Newborn photography is about much more than just snapping pictures. It means mastering safety, lighting, posing, timing, and creating an atmosphere where your baby feels calm and comfortable. It also requires a deep understanding of newborn behaviour and how to work gently and patiently with these tiny, delicate subjects. It takes practice, patience, and dedication, which is why professional newborn photographers invest in ongoing education and specialized equipment.
