Mary wrote this prose tonight, in about 10 minutes, after someone asked what it was like to sail Grebe in a comment on the latest video. I wanted to share it because it is true, and beautiful. .........................
GREBE
Grebe sails like a strong, steady horse.
There is weight beneath you, but never heaviness. She heels and settles into herself, smooth and certain, as though this is simply the position the wind has asked her to take.
Sometimes the wood creaks when the boom shifts or she leans farther into the water. It isn’t a groan. It is the sound of timber taking a new position and absorbing it. Then she is quiet again.
Under sail she doesn’t chatter or fuss. She responds without jumping. Give her the smallest correction and she understands. Then she finds the line and holds it, as though steering is something she remembers from long before I arrived.
She was born with a tiller.
Now there is an old wheel at the helm, worn handles beneath your hands, but something of the tiller remains in her temperament. Direct. Balanced. Uncomplicated.
You do not have to wrestle Grebe through the water.
I ask. She goes.
