Standing at the Carcross Desert in the Yukon — often called the world’s smallest desert (just over a square mile of sand dunes). It’s not a true desert, though; these dunes were left behind by ancient glacial lakes and are still fed by windblown sand from nearby Bennett Lake. Pretty unique spot surrounded by mountains!

Quick clip from this year’s Pioneer Acres Annual Show in Irricana — Alberta’s Pioneer Steam Power Festival.

There’s nothing quite like the sound and smell of a big Case steam traction engine under power. These century-old machines still put on a show, and it’s always a treat to see them running again on the prairie. The whole weekend was full of living history, from the steam engines and threshing demos to the parades and working exhibits.

If you haven’t been out to Pioneer Acres yet, it’s worth the trip. History doesn’t get much more hands-on than this.

Grand Prismatic Spring – a living rainbow in the heart of Yellowstone.

The largest hot spring in the United States puts on a spectacular show of color created by heat-loving microbes. From deep blues in the center to rings of turquoise, green, yellow, and orange along the edges, the mineral-rich water and bacterial mats create nature’s own prism. This short video also includes a glimpse of iconic Old Faithful erupting nearby—two of Yellowstone’s most unforgettable geothermal wonders in one clip.

These beautiful pairs of draft horses are pulling the wagons through the streets at Light Up Okotoks — and one of them is even a Cinderella-style carriage that looks straight out of a fairy tale.
There’s nothing quite like the sound of those hooves, the twinkling lights, and the festive atmosphere in Olde Towne. Who else is counting down the days until this year’s Light Up?

Horseshoe Canyon in southern Alberta doesn’t need much commentary. Most of this short clip is just the view, the crunch of gravel underfoot, and a couple of quick notes about cactus and deer tracks along the way. Easy to see why people stop here.
