Smith Mansion | Wapiti Valley, Wyoming

If you’ve driven west of Cody toward Yellowstone, you’ve seen this thing on the hillside and wondered what on earth it is.

This is the Smith Mansion — locals also call it the Pagoda House or the Crazy House. Francis Lee Smith started it in 1971 as a family cabin in Wapiti Valley and just never stopped building. Floor after floor, balcony after balcony, until it stood about 75 feet tall over the North Fork Highway.

He fell from the structure in 1992 while working on it. The house has sat there ever since, private property, watching the road to Yellowstone.

No trespassing — the view from the highway is the whole show.

Anyone else stop and stare the first time they came around that bend?
