Well, my boy just about gave me a literal heart attack last night. I’m counting my blessings and thanking those heavenly angels I know that are looking after him.

I was watching online and for a split second, before I realized where he was, I was wondering why the heck he missed his bottom barrel. Then when I saw where he was and it was like it wasn’t real. It did bring back memories of his dad’s incident in Grande Prairie because during that race I didn’t know what was really happening either. I remember hearing Les announce that his wagon tipped so I ran to the point in the track where he should have been and he wasn’t there. Seconds go by and I see him coming around under the wagon. Watching Dayton ride the pole around the race track, knowing the things that could go wrong was a wee bit stressful. Tears of worry and tears of joy were shed when I knew he was okay.

I do always say that Mark and Dayton can drive themselves just about out of anything because they are both thinkers and have that ability to slow things down and think about what they need to do. For that I am grateful.

I think this incident shows the importance of good ground. In my barrel racing days I never enjoyed running on poor ground and often would not go full out if I thought my horse or my safety were in jeopardy. With Chuckwagon racing there are just so many more opportunities for things to happen. The mentality of the races must go on is not worth lives, human or animals.

On the lighter side, maybe that surfing lesson we got him in Hawaii as a kid just paid off☺️

There's something about a horse that stops people in their tracks.

You don't have to own one. You don't even have to ride. Somehow, horses have a way of bringing us all together — ranchers and city dwellers, lifelong equestrians and people who've just always loved them from afar.
