Rabbitbrush and Sage in the Yellow Mounds formation of Badlands National Park.

The bags are packed, the compass is pointed West, and the adventure crew is outbound! The eventual destination is our favorite range in Wyoming for a hike starting tomorrow, but tonight will find us sharing communion with the RV crowd boondocking in the badlands. What a treat it is to have such a special midway spot to crash along the long journey!

Countdown to Wyoming!

In two weeks, my girls and I will once again make the long drive out to our favorite alpine temple, our great place of relaxation, reflection, respite, and restoration.

There will be a certain sadness, however, knowing that our sweet dog Luna is growing older with each passing trip. At 10 years old, this may be one of her last proper mountain romps. We’ll make sure to give her adventure in her twilight years, sure, but the clock is winding down on the long and challenging alpine routes.

Every so often along the journey, I’ll have to remind myself to sit with the moments, to give her a good scritch and tell her just how proud of the healthy and happy adventure pup she has become in the years since we grabbed her from the shelter.

One more look at the incredible sunrise I caught over the methane bubbles honeymooning in Alberta this past Winter.

It would be hard to understate how practically and technically difficult this was. Despite having some sturdy spikes, gale force winds on the slick ice limited my mobility. Also, the wind was so brutal that I couldn’t keep my eyes open without donning the atrocious purple tinted snow goggles I had with me, which severely limited my vision as well. It was one of the most quintessential “spray and pray” shoots of my life, but boy oh boy was it fun!

Every year around this time, I grow increasingly restless to get out into the mountains to hear the good news. Like most years, we have our sights set on our favorite range in Wyoming. When planning trips, I always generate a plan A, B, and C. Often times these different plans are in the same general area, but with ever worsening fire seasons, I’m compelled more than ever to generate plans and itineraries in completely separate states so I can (hopefully) be flexible enough to dodge the fires altogether. Such is the reality of the new world, I suppose.

Last month after the dog and I finished our hike on the always restorative Superior Hiking Trail, we decided to spend an extra night in the Tettegouche frontcountry for some Summertime Lake Superior photography, and I kid you not, never in my life have I seen the big lake so still and calm. It was almost eerie, but undeniably beautiful. It was like gazing out over Planet Earth’s largest mirror.

Throwback to a magical morning in Bryce Canyon National Park.

Despite growing up in Utah, this was my first visit to Bryce Canyon. This visit served as a bonus adventure after having completed a backpacking route in nearby Zion. The storm rolled through that evening not long after our arrival, which thwarted an overnight in the backcountry, but I couldn’t much complain. When we woke up and peered over the edge of the rim, we gazed out over a landscape completely transformed from the one we were greeted by the previous evening. The fresh coat of snow made for the most striking scenes full of insanely gorgeous color contrasts between the fresh snow and the red sandstone.

It’s one thing to visit a new park, it’s another to luck out with conditions like this on that first visit. I’ll always be grateful that this park saw fit to reward our efforts with some of the most beautiful scenes I could have imagined!
