I had so much fun strolling the streets of Halifax with M+C the other evening. Such a moody weather day, but these two had such a warm, inviting energy. I felt comfortable around them almost instantly.

Congratulations again on your engagement, M+C! So glad your visit from Texas brought you my way. Grateful our paths crossed and that I got to capture your sweet love.

j+n, a foggy october evening at the beach.

it takes time to settle into being photographed. it’s one of the reasons i carve out two hours for my couples engagement sessions. it sounds like an abundance of time, but having that space to get comfortable, let go a little, and find your rhythm together makes such a difference.

at the beginning, we talk through a few things. i give you some guidance, explain what photographs well, and help you get out of your head a bit. ultimately, though, i want these photos to feel like you. i want you to look back and recognize your relationship as it was in this season of your life.

and if your first thought is “we’re awkward” or “i won’t know what to do,” you’re in very good company. so many of my couples arrive feeling that way. you don’t have to show up already comfortable in front of a camera. that’s something we can work through together.

these two really settled into our time together, and their sweet affection for each other was so lovely to photograph.

getting to know these two the other evening was such a treat. feeling very lucky that i get to do this all over again at their wedding next year. 🩵

five.

i’ve been trying to figure out what I want to say about five years of doing this as a full time career. but I think I’ve been making it way too complicated.

because how do you summarize five years of something that has completely woven itself into your life?

i could tell you how much my work has changed. how much my business has grown. all the things I’ve learned and gotten wrong along the way.

but that’s not really what I’m feeling when I think about the past five years.

i think about how differently I see things now. how much I notice. the glances. the deep breaths. the subtle, beautiful things happening in the background. the half-second expressions that disappear almost as quickly as I notice them.

i’m constantly watching and anticipating. paying attention not only to what something looks like, but what it feels like. and apparently you don’t just turn that off when you put the camera down.

this career has changed the way I see myself, too.

there have been a lot of moments where I’ve questioned myself. compared myself. taken things personally. said yes when I wanted to say no. wondered if I was doing enough. felt completely exhausted and overwhelmed by the very thing I worked so hard to build.

i used to think eventually you reach some point where you just feel completely sure of yourself. i don’t know if that point exists.

i think I’ve just gotten better at trusting myself. trusting what I see. what I’m drawn to. knowing I don’t have to create like anyone else. knowing when something isn’t for me.

there are parts of me that feel completely different than the person who started this. and parts that are exactly the same.

i still really, really love taking pictures. i still get excited about beautiful light. i still love that split second when I know I caught something. i still love people and feel the most inspired by connection.

maybe that’s all five years really is.

the same person, the same camera in my hand, but with a lot more life behind it.

anyway. five years. that feels really big. and it feels like a good excuse to finally show my face around here again and say hi.

i’m Janelle. and I still feel the most myself holding a camera.

When I tell my couples that weddings are living, breathing energy, this is exactly what I mean.

H+V’s day felt so alive. There was joy everywhere, so much emotion, laughter, tears, hugs, little moments happening within bigger ones. Just so much wedding goodness packed into one day.

And honestly, that came as no surprise with these two.
H+V have been such a joy to know from the very beginning. Somewhere along the way, between planning their own wedding and continuously crossing paths at other weddings over the last couple of years, they started to feel like familiar faces I was always genuinely excited to see.

Getting to finally step into their day, meet more of their people and watch all of that energy surround them was pretty special.

This one was full. A little chaotic in the best way. Emotional, hilarious, warm and completely alive.

Exactly what I love about weddings.

This cutie little elopement with ✨East Coast Pop Up Weddings✨ truly filled my cup last week. 🥹

The sweetest two, a thrifted wedding gown, the cutest little blue open-toed shoes, and an afternoon spent frolicking around Tangled Garden together.

It all felt a little bit like a fairy tale, in the most effortless way. I had so much fun capturing these two and all the sweetness of their day.

This was one of those weddings I know will stay with me for a very long time.

I felt so grounded with these two and their families from the start. They were so present with each other, and so tuned in to the people and world around them. Being with them made me slow down, notice more and take in the day a little differently, too.

It rained on and off all day, but just before the ceremony, the skies cleared enough for us to gather outside at Benjamin Bridge. The deep green landscape made the most beautiful backdrop. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Throughout the day, there were little moments that felt like reminders of the people who couldn’t be there. I can’t quite explain it, but they felt close.

It was such a full day, and I feel so privileged to have been there to capture it for a family like theirs.

Last week I celebrated H+R and their beautiful, intimate wedding at Lightfoot & Wolfville, with just over 20 of their closest people.

It was such a reminder of why intimate weddings hold such a special place in my heart.

They got ready together at the owner’s house at The Evangeline, had their first look beneath the weeping willows in Grand Pré, and then met up with their family at Lightfoot for the sweetest ceremony, followed by cocktails and dinner in the w**e cellar.

It truly doesn’t get much better.

H+R are two genuinely good-hearted people, and it never ceases to amaze me how so many wonderful love stories find their way to me. Getting to step into these days, meet the people who matter most, and capture it all as it unfolds is something I’ll never take for granted.

Such a special one.

J+J, on a rainy September long weekend at the beautiful The Cidery at 51 Acres in Moncton. Time and time again, this venue never ceases to amaze me with how beautiful it is, no matter what the weather has in store for us. But what stays with me even more is the way my couples embrace their day exactly as it comes.

This was my first time photographing a wedding where I didn’t speak the primary language, but the warmth and happiness were easy to feel. Between the bride’s constant smile and the way these two welcomed me into their day, there was so much that needed no translation. (Although, when her dad stood on a chair to deliver his speech, I did find myself wishing my French was a little better. Someone is going to have to fill me in on what I missed.)

From their engagement session to their wedding day, it’s been the same easy joy of being around two people who are so in love and so lovely, inside and out. So grateful our paths crossed and that I got to be part of it all. Adore these two.

I left this engagement session feeling like I’d just spent the evening with old friends.

Something I’ve believed for as long as I’ve been photographing people is that however I leave a session feeling is probably pretty close to how the people on the other side of my camera are leaving it too.

And all these years later, that keeps proving itself true.

I drove home from this one thinking, I genuinely feel like I’ve known these two forever. Then the next day, they wrote me and basically said the exact same thing about me.

I think that’s the part of photography I’ve always been most drawn to. The human part of it.

The noticing and the intuition. Picking up on the little things people do without even realizing they’re doing them. Knowing when someone needs a little direction and when they just need the space to be themselves. The familiarity that can happen really quickly when people let you in a little. The connection and even the vulnerability of it all.

The photographs are what we get to keep, but I think how people feel while we’re making them matters just as much.

And this one just felt really, really good. Can’t wait to celebrate these two in 2027! ✨

J+S at Bull Point Estate //

There’s something about this property that already feels like a little piece of Nantucket tucked away on the Nova Scotia coast, but seeing this bride’s vision come to life here made it feel even more so. Every part of their day felt intentional, coastal, classic, relaxed and completely at home in this setting.

But beyond how beautiful everything was, one of the things I kept noticing throughout the day was the bride herself.

There were so many little moments where I watched her stop and actually take it all in. Looking around the room. Sitting outside alone. Taking a second before moving onto the next thing. Just genuinely being present in what was happening around her. And I loved that.

Wedding days move incredibly fast, and there’s really no way to know what it will feel like until you’re actually standing in the middle of your own. To have the awareness to create those little pockets of breathing room and really experience the day you spent so long imagining is such a beautiful thing.

And this entire group made that pretty easy to do. From the moment I arrived, everyone was warm, welcoming, helpful, hilarious and just genuinely happy to be there. By the end of the night, it didn’t really feel like I had spent the day on the outside documenting everything looking in. Somehow, they made me feel like I had been welcomed right into the experience with them.

Such a special day, with really wonderful people, in one of the most beautiful little corners of Nova Scotia.
