Another sunny Saturday and I’m thinking back to how fun Open City was two weeks ago!

You can visit these businesses any time of year, but here are a few photographs from my Downtown Halifax adventure to inspire you.

It was one of those perfect spring days where everyone just seemed happy to be out exploring the city. People wandering between shops, popping into galleries, trying special Open City takeout treats, and spending the day discovering local businesses.

After photographing Open City for 15 years, I still love what the event represents: getting people out into the community and encouraging them to support the small businesses that help make this city feel vibrant and interesting year-round.

Already looking forward to next year!

I’m honestly still trying to process this one. I’m heartbroken that we are saying goodbye to Obladee.

A warm light on a cold night.
A table shared with friends.
A glass of wine that turns into two… then three… because no one is quite ready to leave.

Obladee created that kind of magic. It was never loud or flashy, just deeply thoughtful, intentional, and full of heart. A space where the details mattered, where local producers were celebrated, and where you always felt taken care of.

So many of my favourite memories in this city happened here. Conversations that went on for hours, celebrations big and small, and those simple nights that somehow became unforgettable.

It’s also been one of the places that shaped me creatively over the years. Photographing in that space always felt special… the light, the warmth, the beautiful plates paired with thoughtfully curated wines.

Some places just stay with you — this will always be one of them.

Open City is almost here and I’m so excited for this one!

This will be my 15th year photographing this event! I love seeing our city shows up for local in such a big way 💛

On Saturday, May 9, the Halifax Peninsula and Downtown Dartmouth turn into a full-on celebration of small business. Doors open, sidewalks spill over, and everywhere you go there’s something happening. Pop-ups, special menus, meet-the-makers, little surprises you weren’t expecting… it’s the kind of day where you want to wander with no real plan and just see where it takes you.

This event always reminds me why I love what I do and why I care so much about telling the stories behind these businesses. The people, the passion, the creativity… it’s all out in the open for one day and the energy is incredible.

I’ll be out there all day capturing it, probably with a coffee in hand and my camera ready. If you see me, say hi!

Grab a friend, wear comfy shoes, and make a day of it. Trust me, you’re going to want to explore.

Happy International Women’s Day 💛

Today I’m thinking about the incredible women who have been part of my photography journey over the past 19 years. So much of what I do is collaborative, and I feel so lucky to work alongside women who bring creativity, energy, and great ideas to every shoot. We cook together and create the most beautiful shared meals.

Thank you to the women who cheer me on, collaborate with me, and help turn our photoshoots into something really special. Thank you to the women who simply support me every day, my family, my friends.

Honestly, some of the most fun days of my career have been spent in kitchens, studios, and around tables with talented women making beautiful things together. Feeling very grateful for that today. ✨📸🍓

Thank you for the photo!

Enjoyed a magical sunny afternoon at with my fellow foodies and yesterday ☀️

This experience was so fun, and the food was amazing, cooked outdoors over an open flame and in the smoker. Great group activity any time of the year. Thank you Christine and Oscar for hosting us!

The fabulous food we enjoyed:
🌿 Seared Scallops with Chili Garlic St Brigid’s Butter
🌿 Fireside Chowder
🌿 Raclette with Ham and Hot Honey
🌿 Smoked Chicken and Feta Salad
🌿 Roasted Winter Squash Cake with Maple Whip and Pecans

Looking forward to visiting again!

Forage & Feast!

There’s something so lovely about spending an afternoon outdoors, learning about the many wild edible plants growing all around us, and then sitting down to an abundant feast made from them.

Last Sunday, on a bright and chilly February afternoon in Aylesford, I joined Chef Fiona Genevieve and forager Jessika Guavin for a uniquely Nova Scotian dining experience.

The menu felt like a love letter to the landscape:
🌿 Braised Leeks with Hazelnuts & Sea Truffle Crumble topped with Pickled Pine Catkins
🌿 Beet Carpaccio with Pickled Spruce Tip, Birch Syrup & Preserved Crab Apple Blossoms
🌿 Eggplant Caviar with Fermented Green Tomatoes
Toasted Tomato Fregola with Red Wine Braised Shiitake, Maitake & Black Trumpets, finished with Caribou Lichen
🌿 Fresh Bread with Compound Butters infused with Quince Blossoms & Ginger, and Blue Mountain Petals, Rose & Caramelized Garlic
🌿 Porcini Gingerbread Cookies with Rum Butter Glaze
Rose Crepe Cake with Almonds & Pistachios topped with Magnolia Honey

The drinks were just as thoughtful: Chaga & Ginger Hot Chocolate, White Pine, Blueberry & Sweet Fern Lemonade, and Fermented Shiro Plum & Valerian Root Gazoz.

Beautiful food, a fun group of people to share a meal with, and that special magic that happens when you connect ingredients to place. I love documenting experiences like this! Glad you could join me 😊
