The Pan-American Traditional Dragon Dance Competition took place in Edmonton this past weekend. The props consisted pallets, stools, and benches, that were set up and taken down by each group within a certain time frame Each performance told a different story and lasted between 7-8 minutes. It's been a few years since an orb spider resided in my garage by the window. It was 9:30 PM when I noticed this beauty ( some might disagree) enjoying a wrap. Seven feet up, I had to stand on a stool. I used a single flash strobe in combination with the outside back door light and the inside garage lights. I'm quite happy with the lighting, as I was concerned about reflections from the glass.

About 8 weeks have past since I last had the opportunity to photograph this juvenile common loon. This was my 1st time seeing one at this stage. I love it's expression.

This is a short clip of an orb spider tending to her young. You can see some spiderlings that appear transparent as they were recently hatched. The low evening light limited my depth of field which is very shallow with a macro lens.
Correction Update: This is a wetland long legged cob weaver.

Wolf Spiders are members of the family Lycosidae. They are so named because their method of hunting is to run down their prey like that of a wolf. Wolf spiders are fast and agile hunters that rely on good eyesight to hunt. The female wolf spider spins a silk sac around her eggs and attaches it to her body. The sac can contain 50-100 eggs for a smaller species and up to 300 for a bigger and healthier female. This sac protects the eggs while she goes about her business. According to what I've read, when the young spiderlings are ready to be hatched, the mother rips open the sac and the young quickly climb unto her back, where they will remain for 2-3 weeks. Apparently this is suppose to be a very fast process, less than 1 minute, but what I witnessed doesn't jive with the articles that I read. The 1st two images were taken 2 hrs and 20 minutes apart. I can see a few more spiderlings on the 2nd image. I never got to see this particular female again but found another one that was carrying all her young minus the sac.
