Maybe family portraits have been sitting somewhere on your fall list.

Right alongside school forms, appointments, groceries, and seventeen other things you haven’t quite gotten around to yet.

Here’s what matters: you don’t need to have it all figured out before you reach out.

I’ll help with wardrobe - the dress in this photograph is from the studio wardrobe. I can arrange hair and make-up if you’d like it (this mama was taken care of by my amazing team). I’ll choose the light. I’ll guide you through the session.

And when it’s over, I’ll help you decide how you want to live with the photographs we’ve made.

You bring your people. I’ll take care of the rest.

September and October sessions take place in the field at golden hour.

I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago.

Which feels both completely reasonable and absolutely impossible.

I don't usually share much about birthdays. But this one has had me thinking.

About how strange time is - how some years seem to stretch forever while you're living them, and then somehow entire decades become a handful of memories.

About the versions of ourselves we don't realize we're leaving behind until we're already somewhere new.

And about how much more I value the ordinary evidence of a life now than I did when I was younger.

The people I love.
The places we've been.
The faces that have changed.
The photographs that bring back things I didn't even know I'd forgotten.

And, apparently, about being in the photographs myself.

For someone who has spent more than 25 years making portraits of other people, I am remarkably good at staying on my own side of the camera.

It has been five years since I had photographs of myself that were "current."

So I did it.

And yes, I looked through the first round and immediately found seventeen things to question because apparently being a photographer does not make you immune to being human. 😂

But then I found this one.

And I thought: there I am.

Fifty doesn't make me feel particularly wise.

But it does make me very aware that getting older is a privilege. That this version of me doesn't need to wait for some future, improved version to take her place in the photographs.

She's here now. And I'm glad to have the evidence.

So here's to 50. To what's already been, and whatever comes next. 🤍

I don’t think children remember motherhood the way adults talk about it.

Not as a list of tasks.
Not as the invisible labour.
Not as who booked the appointment or remembered library day.

They remember it in flashes.

The feel of your hand, the sound of your voice from the next room, the way you reached for them without thinking. The place they landed when they were hurt, tired, shy, proud, scared, or half asleep.

They remember the shape of your presence long before they understand the weight of it.

That’s part of why photographs matter. Because one day, they may want to look back and see your face turned toward them.

Your baby does not need to “behave” for newborn photos.

They don’t need to sleep perfectly.
They don’t need to settle on a schedule.
They don’t need to do anything on command.

Newborn sessions at redwagon are baby-led, which means there is time for feeding, soothing, snuggling, changing, and simply letting your baby be exactly who they are.

Some babies sleep deeply.
Some stretch and wiggle.
Some want to be held.

All of it is welcome.

You made it through the first year.

The longest, shortest, sweetest whirlwind.

One minute they fit in the crook of your arm, and the next they’re standing, grinning, and covering their tiny fingers in frosting.

A first birthday cake smash session is about more than frosting on little cheeks though. It’s a way to hold onto who your baby is right now - their expressions, their curiosity, their delight, and all the tiny pieces of this season that already feel like they’re changing.

A little look back at The Front Steps Project.

Six years ago, in a season that felt deeply strange and uncertain, I photographed families on their front porches from the sidewalk. It was a small way to make something steady, in a very unsteady time.

Looking back at these now, what stays with me most is not just the strangeness of that season, but the tenderness of it. People showing up for one another. Families holding close. A record of love in the middle of so much unknown.

I’m still so grateful to everyone who said yes.
